Dessert for Breakfast: 10 Most Sugary Kids Cereals
Cereal. Kids love it. It’s the highlight of every trip to the grocery store for children … and mom’s nightmare.
When I was growing up we were each allowed to pick out one box of cereal per month and keep it in our room. We could ration it as best we wanted but when it was gone we had to hop on board the giant bagged cereal program. You know, the cheap stuff.
Regardless of whether it was in a box or bag, we always went for the sugary stuff.
Now, as Shine from Yahoo reports, if your kid is eating cereal in the morning, your kid is basically eating dessert for breakfast.

Teen Girls Hurt More By Obesity
Obesity hurts young girls more than it hurts boys, say researchers at the University of California.
Obese teen girls have a higher risk of high blood pressure than boys, which can lead later in life to heart disease and stroke. In fact, obese teen girls’ risk of hypertension is 9 times higher than that of girls who have a healthy weight, while for obese boys it was 3.5 times higher than boys within the normal weight range. Preventing a lifetime of serious health risk is yet another reason to help our children get to and maintain a healthy weight.
Medical News Today reports that the difference between obese boys and girls high blood pressure risk may be due to their levels of activity: “Obese girls are 50% to 60% less physically active than obese boys.”
Chocolate Milk’s School Lunch Makeover
Call it a coincidence, but just months after the nation’s second largest school district banned flavored milks from its school lunch offerings, milk producers are now offering chocolate milk that contains just a bit more sugar and calories than the plain variety.
In June, the Los Angeles Unified School District school board voted 5-2 on a milk contract that excluded chocolate and strawberry milk. This week, the Milk Processor Education Program, announced chocolate milk served in schools around the country will have 38 percent less added sugar and only 31 more calories than regular (read: whole) white milk.
Is that still too much? Continue reading »
Little Girls Don’t Need Perkier Butts. And Maybe Their Moms Don’t, Either. [VIDEO]
This year has been a doozy for girls’ products. First, little girls are offered padded bikini tops to amp up their nonexistent boobs. Now they’re getting pitched shoes to perk up their bottoms. Skecher’s Shape-Ups are a hit with adult women hoping to tone their thighs and glutes. Now, the company has launched a new line of Shape-Ups just for girls. The junior shape ups come in the traditional girl-attractor colors with pink, purple and glittery accents. Parents were outraged. Melissa Gerstein from Moms and The City says she was floored when she saw the ads: “Such a wrong message to send to little girls”. But Skechers defended their product, saying these shoes are simply promoting health with “the same messaging as Michelle Obama’s Get Moving campaign.”
Ok, so why did they only make them for little girls… and not little boys?
Insecure Toddlers More Likely To Become Obese
The importance of a mother/child bond nearly goes without saying. And, as if you needed an excuse to be close to your child, new research finds insecure toddlers may have a greater risk of being obese before they even start kindergarten.
Researchers studied data from 6,650 American children born in 2001 who were evaluated at age 2 and 4. Hours were spent watching the 24-month-olds interact at home with their mothers. They wanted to find out if upset children could be comforted through contact with their mothers (duh) and if the children sought hugs and physical touch from their mothers.
Here were the results, as reported by TIME: Continue reading »
Your Kids’ Annoying Behavior Could Save Your Life
These kids and their demands. It’s not so bad when you actually make a commitment to paying attention to them. But if you’re trying to get anything else done, forget it. Each kid translates to an increased interruption frequency of +27.6%. Okay, I made that up. But it does seem like when kids are around there is about zero chance of sitting in your chair for longer than 7 minutes at a stretch. There you are trying to relax and watch some cancelled soap operas, or write your very important blog post, when you are wrested from your supine stupor by the inevitable cry:
“Mommmmmy?”
Which can only mean one thing. You need to get off your comfortable butt and do something. Though these kid interruptions may be bad for your productivity, it turns out they might actually be good for you. And not just because they make you pay attention to somebody besides yourself for a change.
Sugar: The Sweetest Evil, and Why Doctors Think It Causes Cancer

Now I know why the American Cancer Society stopped using birthday cakes in their "Happy Birthday" ads.
Robert Lustig is a specialist on pediatric hormone disorders and the leading expert in childhood obesity at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. According to the enormous feature in The New York Times Magazine about his theories, UCSF has one of the best medical schools in the country. Lustig published his first paper on childhood obesity over a decade ago, and he believes the leading cause of the epidemic is something we all consume every day: sugar.
But not only does Lustig believe that sugar causes obesity and diabetes in children and adults, he goes so far as to describe sugar and high fructose corn syrup as toxic, poisonous and downright evil. Times scribe Gary Taubes is upfront about the fact that after 10 years of research, he’s in complete agreement with Lustig. Early in the lengthy piece, Taubes writes, “when you bake your children a birthday cake or give them lemonade on a hot summer day, you may be doing them more harm than good, despite all the love that goes with it.” Lustig, Taubes and others believe that sugar can even cause cancer.
