We’ve heard from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, we’ve heard from First Lady Michelle Obama, and we’ve heard from students everywhere: School lunches are bad, bad, bad. But what do parents think about the food their kids are being served in the school cafeteria?
A survey commissioned by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation asks that question and, as it turns out, we see room for improvement as well. Of the 800 adults surveyed, 55% believe school lunch food is nutritionally “poor” or “only fair.” That number rises to 63% when you ask parents who have school-aged children. Continue reading »
A new study has found that when it comes to getting kids to eat more fruit, the secret is in the presentation.
Dutch researchers out of Maastricht University were looking for ways to get kids to eat their colors, and what they discovered was another way to annoy parents. It’s bad enough I have to wash the fruit and wash the fruit, now I need to make it look pretty, too? From Yahoo! News:
The Food and Drug Administration wants everyday consumers’ input on food labeling. Not the standardized nutrition labels found on the back of packaged foods, but the stuff on the front. What information would you like to have in addition to the stamps and seals and Smart Choice endorsements that, once they started showing up on stuff like Fruit Loops, kind of became meaningless.

A little before 2 a.m. on Friday, I pulled into a truck stop outside Syracuse. My kids, asleep in the backseat, started to fidget as soon as the engine turned off. The Internet is buzzing over a Sesame Street Workshop study that found when given a choice between an unhealthy snack and a healthy one, kids were more likely to go with the healthy choice when it had a sticker of a favorite cartoon character attached. A new study suggests that what you eat during pregnancy today might have an impact on not only your children’s health, but your granddaughters’ as well.
Scientists at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center are saying that their study shows a link between a high fat diet during pregnancy and a higher risk of breast cancer in future generations.
