One of the few good things about pregnancy, other than the part where you get a baby at the end, is supposed to be that you can eat whatever you want. Go ahead and reach for that brownie! You’re eating for two. And pregnant women are supposed to gain weight.
Not anymore. In addition to the endless carping about how women risk permanent weight gain if they pack on the pounds during pregnancy, a new study shows that a mom’s prenatal diet can put her future child at risk for obesity.
Free apps to help kids make healthy food choices
As part of her “Let’s Move” campaign, First Lady Michelle Obama partnered with the Agricultural Department to invite software developers, game designers, students and other tech types to develop applications that would encourage kids to eat healthy and exercise. And with $60,000 in prize money and a special White House event on the line, the entries poured in.

In fact, some of us are pretty adept when it comes to lying in order to get our kids to do what we want them to do. And nowhere are our fibs more fantastic than at the dinner table. Nestle’s Boost Kid Essentials drinks for kids may be good for kids, but they’re not a panacea for all that ails your little ones. Now, Nestle will tell you that up front.
Nestle has agreed to stop claiming its Boost drink for kids has immune benefits. The agreement is part of a settlement with the FTC following investigation of a recent Boost ad campaign.
The ads claimed the drink, which comes with a straw filled with probiotics, could protect kids from colds, diarrhea and other mild illnesses. The ads portrayed Boost as being so good for kids’ immune systems that it would keep kids from missing school due to illness.
The FTC investigated these claims and found there was insufficient scientific evidence to back them up. Nestle admitted no wrongdoing in their settlement, and the company was not fined.
Ever wonder what would happen if your diet consisted of all of the foods you see advertised on TV?
The short answer is: you’d be really unhealthy.
And for the long answer, you’re in luck – a new report published this month in The Journal of the American Dietetic Association addresses this very question.
If you ate only foods you saw in TV commercials, you would consume 25 times the recommended amount of sugar and 20 times the amount of fat, but less than half the dairy, fiber and fruits and vegetables, according to The New York Times. Continue reading »

When I was pregnant with my first child, I read a memorable humorous essay on how to take a baby to a restaurant. The advice was simple and compelling: Don’t.
It’s advice I’ve happily (and sometimes unhappily) ignored for six years, as I’ve dragged my kids through restaurants ranging from high-end downtown places with star chefs to our local pizza joint. Few of these places have kids’ menus.
Which means we could probably enjoy a family meal at I Trulli in New York. The owner, Nicola Marzovilla, explains to the New York Times this week why he believes children’s menus are the death of civilization.
