If you think June Cleaver was right on, then this probably won't be the channel for you
I don’t know about you, but ever since becoming a mom I’ve been fascinated by other moms. Particularly the ones portrayed on TV.
The June Cleavers, the Elyse Keatons, the Peggy Bundys. How they handle kids, how they handle their marriages, how they handle their homes, how they handle (heaven forbid!) sex — I watch them like they’re animals in the zoo. We don’t speak the same language, but we often still manage to have the same experiences.
Very few people seem to understand that. Until now.

Thankfully my daughter’s recent facial injury has healed, leaving only a slight scar that should continue to fade over time. Miranda Cosgrove's new album, High Maintenance
Sunday’s New York Times Magazine was dubbed “the youth issue” (note lowercase). The cover story: Peggy Orenstein’s fascinating profile of Miranda Cosgrove, star of Nickelodeon’s iCarly, and TV’s good girl of the moment. Cosgrove is carrying the torch once held by Miley Cyrus, which begs the question: Will Miranda Cosgrove mirror the Hannah Montana star’s very public fall from grace?
Like Miley before her, Miranda Cosgrove is packaged as spunky and sassy without being sexual. Miley shed that image in a few fell swoops and scantily clad photo shoots. So far, the iCarly star is supposedly content with her “golden girl” image. But is it only a matter of time before the weight of being a respectable role model to younger girls begins to clash with the teen’s need to carve out her own grown-up identity?
According to Orenstein, author of the popular new book Cinderella Ate My Daughter, the squeaky clean image of these tween and teen girl stars may actually be part of the reason for their rebellion.
SpongeBob Legends Of Bikini Bottom premiered on Facebook first, not Nickelodeon..
In an interesting partnership, Nickelodeon has teamed up with Facebook and aired tonight’s brand new episode of everyone’s favorite, SpongeBob Squarepants, one day early on Facebook. Although premiered on television for the first time tonight on Nickelodeon, the first episode of a five part series called Legends of Bikini Bottom premiered on the social networking site last night. Guest stars include Amy Sedaris (Ma Angler), who plays the leader of the clan of trenchbillies, and Ginnifer Goodwin (as Mermaid). The clan holds SpongeBob and his buddy Patrick captive while they are out jellyfishing one day.
This was big news in our household. At 8pm, the kids sat awaiting the new episode. In case they missed it, they set it to record on DVR earlier today. A new SpongeBob episode is big news in our home and apparently in a lot of other places. While the show is funny, really funny, I didn’t realize how much it appealed to the older kids, but it must if Facebook got the first glimpse. Surely, they don’t think that 5 or 6 year-olds have Facebook accounts?
As families are making their summer getaway plans, the nation’s hotels and motels, still suffering from the recession-related decline in business travel, are trying to get a piece of the vacation action. As USA Today reports, they are rolling out the red carpet for leisure travelers.

Back when I was a kid, it seemed as if all my friends’ moms were addicted to soap operas. Today’s moms are more likely to have the TV tuned to kiddie shows — which is why it’s not such a surprise to hear that The Walt Disney Company will eliminate its SoapNet cable channel and replace it with a new network targeted to preschoolers.
Since it aired soap opera reruns, the 10-year-old SoapNet has been relatively cheap for Disney to operate. But, as Nickelodeon has discovered with Nick Jr. (formerly Noggin), preschool television programming is big business.

Don’t worry. Dora, star of Nickelodeon’s “Dora the Explorer,” along with her companions Boots, Backpack and Cousin Diego, is doing just fine. That’s just the headline to the mock news story that screenwriter and playwright Sherman Yellen wrote for The Huffington Post.
