Standing in line for the H1N1 shot last fall were parents, grandparents, and other caretakers of newborn infants.
Because there is no flu shot — H1N1 or seasonal — approved for infants under six months, and because infants are at high risk for complications if they do catch the flu, the next best thing is making sure that everyone around the infant is vaccinated.
But a new study out of the University of Washington, Seattle suggests that seasonal flu vaccines may be safely used in infants as young as six weeks old.
Corny as it is (you noticed the photo, right?), I love reading all those Facebook posts, Twitter tweets, blogs and articles about what different people are thankful for. Friends and family are a popular choice, as is good health, a home, food. And of course I’m thankful for those things, too.
And then there are the small things. Those people, whom, in hindsight, you’re crazy grateful for as a parent, but you never had the chance to properly thank. Here are five of mine from the past year or so. I’m sure there are more, but due to my sheer desperation at the time, these are the stand-outs.

Pregnant and still not convinced you should get a flu shot? Three new studies might just help you make up your mind. Here are the findings of each:
Crying – it’s the only method newborns have to signal to their parents that they’re in distress. Hunger, pain, fatigue, discomfort — it’s all expressed through one kind of cry or another.
But what would happen if your baby couldn’t cry? Little Devon, son to Jody Woods and Joshua Sutterfield of Cullman, Alabama was born without that ability. His vocal cords are paralyzed.

A recent UK study published in the British Medical Journal found that among 80 cases of SIDS studied, 54 percent happened while co-sleeping with an adult, a finding similar to other co-sleeping studies. But they also found that a large percentage of their control group were also co-sleeping, and none of them had died of SIDS. So they dug a little deeper. Continue reading »
