Newborn baby abandoned next to this dumpster.
I know firsthand the fear of becoming pregnant at 17-years-old. Except I didn’t keep my baby. I had an abortion It’s something I don’t think I’ll ever come to terms with. Especially now that I have children. And honestly, in a way, I kind of think what I did was worse than what a teen did. At least her baby is still alive.

Warning: Cuteness overload!
Introducing a newborn to The Dog Of The House (yes, all caps) is a tricky business, at best. Try introducing a newborn baby to two frisky Labrador Retrievers used to running the show.
Yikes!
A new video of an introduction between baby and dog is making the internet rounds. Although, unlike my dogs, who were a little pissed off about our new addition, this little guy is desperate, DESPERATE, I tell you, to meet the newest family member.

Sweet Violet in the snow
I was watching my sweet two-year-old Violet read a book to herself today. Well, her version of reading, anyway. I watched her babble nonsense words while turning pages of her little book and just broke down bawling.
Henry is just over a week old, and so far, fingers crossed, everything is going great. With Henry. Violet is another story altogether. She’s fussier, cries a lot and ignores Henry. All things that are apparently normal toddler behavior when a newborn is introduced into the mix.
Still. I can’t help it. I feel so guilty. Intellectually I know that’s ridiculous but I feel terrible for so completely rocking her world, you know?
I’ve been going back, looking at old photos of my little girl and I just want to bawl my eyes out that she’ll never be that baby again. I’m sure I’m just a hormonal mess but having Henry reminds me of what a tiny baby Violet once was and now her little starfish toddler hands seem gigantic. Until I pushed out Henry I called Violet my baby, but now she’s a big girl. And it makes me so sad!
Danish researchers link jaundice and autism.
Dr. Susan Hyman, a pediatrician and autism expert at the University of Rochester Medical Center, says that it is becoming increasingly clear that autism and related disorders are not one disease but a collection of “similar symptoms caused by different things, stemming from a complex interaction of environmental and genetic factors.”
And the more researchers delve into the causes of autism, the more mysterious it seems to become. But according to Byran King, an autism expert at Seattle Children’s Hospital, the results of recent a Danish study suggests that at least some of the injuries that contribute to autism take place before or shortly after birth. If you’ve got a newborn, you know parenting isn’t always a dream.
A recent study by Iftikhar Mirza, sleep scientist at Silentnight bed company, says that parents of infants miss out on 912 hours of much-needed sleep, based on a minimum of 5 hours a night, before their child turns 2.

Babies tend to spend a lot of time with their faces just inches from the floor. Whether they are scooting, crawling or just hanging out on a play mat, a baby placed on the floor is a baby who cannot fall to the floor. But while floor play may indeed be the safest play, it has a downside. According to experts, the air down there is far dirtier than the air up where we grownups breathe.
Alan Greene, a pediatrician at Stanford University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, says that a baby who spends a lot of time on the floor (and what baby doesn’t?) is exposed to nearly five times the household dust that adults are. And that dust, he says, is most likely full of toxins that could seriously compromise a little one’s health. Continue reading »
Before my husband and I decided to start trying to have a baby, I figured I should try to wean myself off of Prozac. I had been taking the anti-depressant for several years after a couple of bouts of debilitating depression.
After getting the okay from my doctor, I slowly stopped taking my medication. At first, I felt great. But after a few weeks, I was so anxious and depressed that my husband was growing concerned. He gently suggested that I re-think my decision. I saw my doctor and we decided that Prozac was a good choice for me during pregnancy. Luckily, my doctor was supportive of my decision.
