A 7.8 earthquake rattled New Zealand.
New Zealand suffered a 7.8 earthquake and a subsequent tsunami warning. Thankfully, the tsunami warning was dismissed, but the quake’s repercussions have not been immediately identified.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 7.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of New Zealand, in the Kermadec Islands region.
Today's earthquake was the second major one to hit Christchurch in five months
Following an earthquake with a 6.3-magnitude on Tuesday, at least 65 people are dead in New Zealand, with scores more trapped. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which hit at 12:51 p.m. local time, measured a depth of 2.5 miles.
Rescue crews with sniffer dogs are still searching for survivors in Christchurch, a city with a population of 350,000. Many of the trapped are sending text messages or making phone calls to try to help rescuers locate them.
A teenager from New Zealand successfully defended herself from a shark attack recently, escaping without even requiring stitches. As a shark-o-phobe and avid beach swimmer, I find this news both terrifying and reassuring. Continue reading »

While much of the world goes in the opposite direction, voters in New Zealand put up a public referendum asking to be allowed to spank their children.
