Daycare’s pretty much a bust in the U.S. It’s expensive, difficult to vet and not terribly flexible. Also? It’s like you have to know someone who knows someone to find out about lots of the good, affordable options.
Forget about it if you need any kind of flexibility, too.
For women who are tempted to leave their careers — or even take a break from them — childcare is a huge reason. That’s certainly true for actors, according to this article in the NY Times. Veteran actor Sharon Wheatley, who writes a parenting column for an industry newspaper, has this to say about babies and Broadway:

Nursery University documentary about preschool in Manhattan
About an hour ago, hundreds of parents around Manhattan, and all the friends, nannies and personal consultants they enlisted, started dialing the phone.
Most got a busy signal. So they started dialing again. Busy signal. Hang up. Dial again. And so went their morning, calling all over Manhattan. And for what? An application for preschool. An APPLICATION!
Finding and getting your kid into preschool in America isn’t particularly fun anywhere, I’m guessing. But preschool admissions is its own special beast for the affluent in crowded cities like New York, where a post 9/11 baby boom led to 15 to 20 toddler applicants for each available spot at the best nursery schools.
Now, normally I’m rolling my eyes at all the breathless drama surrounding the preschool school search and application process just about anywhere people are getting breathless and dramatic about it. Continue reading »

Producers of “Expressing Motherhood” have opened submissions for a third show in the Los Angeles-area for the January 2010 show.
There’s still time to attend the show’s first-ever New York City performances, Sept. 24 to 26 at TADA! Theatre. There, a dozen or so moms will perform their original pieces based on their own experiences as moms. (We hear there’s a song about a minivan.) Go here for ticket information.
I attended an August L.A. performance and wrote about it here. There, I overheard someone involved with the show talking to some audience members about who they would consider casting. The producers are trying hard to diversify. Continue reading »
Did you know that New York City has more than 1-million schoolchildren in their system? Yeah, I didn’t know that either. And in response to having such a large community, the nation’s biggest school district announced it will offer swine flu vaccinations to each child for free this fall.
When the vaccine is available around mid to late October, the New York City schools as well as hundreds of smaller school districts will be administering the vaccine to most of their students. But don’t start worrying about needles flying here there and everywhere. The vaccine will probably mostly be given via a “mist” in the nose. Continue reading »
New moms often complain nobody ever tells them the bad parts of pregnancy, childbirth and the 18+ years thereafter.
Instead, the freshly pregnant find out about things like meconium aspiration only after they’ve pushed out a baby who is quickly whisked away to the NICU.
Or that it’s completely within the realm of possibility that her beautiful new baby will incessantly cry for the first three months of its life.
Or that her beautiful new baby will someday develop a condition that not even the experts can identify.
Or that one day she may actually call her 8-year-old son an asshole — and not feel all that bad about it. Continue reading »
