Cyberbullying is a real problem. Several recent teen suicides have been attributed to kids being harassed and humiliated online. Many others have lost friends, been the subject of disciplinary action at schools and simply been made desperately unhappy.
Should Facebook and MySpace be doing more to stop it?
Slate takes a look at how the big social media sites handle bullying, and what more they could do.
My five-year-old recently used some of her carefully hoarded birthday money to buy herself a Webkinz. She generously bought one for her little sister, too. The girls have spent the past week naming, cuddling and grooming this fluffy stuffed critters. They’ve made collars and bracelets and hats for them, all with matching sparkly beads and ribbon.
Luckily for me, I don’t think either girl has realized yet that there’s a Webkinz website where they can extend their play into the Intertubes. It’s only a matter of time, though. Continue reading »

This time it’s Elizabeth A. Thrasher, a 40-year-old (read: should know better) Missouri woman who had a “deteriorating relationship” with the woman her ex-boyfriend was dating. (Because that’s unusual.) The woman’s 17-year-old daughter got involved in some virtual back-and-forth and sent Thrasher a MySpace message that commanded she “grow up.”
New surveys say teenagers are decamping from social media in droves. And to that, I say, come on, how long did you really expect them to stick around? They’re getting friend requests from their grandmothers! Continue reading »
