Early reports indicate that though tsunami damage was widespread, it could have been a lot worse.
Tsunami waves generated from a massive earthquake in Japan rocked that country’s east coast and killed hundreds before traveling at 500 miles per hour as they headed toward Hawaii and the western US seaboard. And as early reports begin to surface, two things are certain. Damage caused by the tsunamis was, indeed, extensive. But it also could have been a lot worse which is good news for a lot of bay areas.
Still, to people like retired mill worker and Crescent City resident Ted Scott, it must have seemed like deja vu all over again. Scott remembers all to well the 1964 tsunami that killed 17 on the west coast, 11 in Crescent City alone. “This is just devastating. I never thought I’d see this again,” he told ABC news.
Many will be glued to their TVs today to get the latest on the the Japanese earthquake and the coming Tsunamis. And there is lot to see.

The more I learn of the sudden unraveling of Keith Olbermann’s often tempestuous employment at MSNBC, the more obvious it becomes that Keith Olbermann, bright and clever though he is, has the temperament of a child. A spoiled child at that. Olbermann has always come off childish, even back in his days at ESPN where he was often unable to contain his glee at whatever cute quip he had just made. Simply put, Olbermann has alway been and always will be smitten with himself. But it’s not Olbermann’s self-crush that gets me. Nor is it his anti-establishment views that put me off. In fact, I’m often in 100% agreement with him.
Instead, it’s the fact that he mistakes himself to be every bit as important as the news on which he opines which has always bothered me about the smug anchor. And that’s what my children often do. Misconstrue how they fit into any given situation, often exaggerating their role to a disruptive degree.
Anyone who says the health care system isn’t broke never said that to the face of a young child who lost his mother. Marcelas Owens, whose mother died of pulmonary hypertension, is taking his message straight to congress.
“The health care system is broken, and it caused my mother’s death,” Marcelas said in an interview on MSNBC.
A new survey has found that parents who still have young children at home are among the angriest people in the U.S. As a mother of three under 8, that really ticks me off.
The study of 1,800 Americans – conducted by a guy in freaking happy-go-lucky Canada, grrrr — asked participants 18 years and older when and how they feel angry. Scott Shieman, of the University of Toronto, wanted to build a broad portrait of anger in America.
The reported emotions ranged from mild annoyance to full-on rage. The study found that having children was associated with angry feelings and behaviors like yelling, particularly for women. Continue reading »
Just when you think we’ve gone beyond safety issues with regard to homebirth — what with the findings in this study and, more recently, this one, among others — the Today show goes and airs “The Perils of Home Birth,” a seven-minute segment so poorly reported, so one-sided and salacious, that instead of feeling defensive and outraged — I laughed. Out loud. Alone!
Here’s what I learned: women choose home birth because it’s “hedonistic,” and the equivalent of a spa treatment. Furthermore, reporter Peter Alexander suggests that women choose home birth because famous people like Meryl Streep and Demi Moore had some babies at home. Home birth, Alexander says, is “fashionable, trendy and the latest cause celebre.”

A three-year-old boy was found unharmed after he took an eight-mile ride down a river in northeastern British Columbia perched atop his little red toy truck.
Without a life jacket, or really any boating skills (or a driver’s license), he floated down the swift-moving Peace River for nearly 2 hours. Just taking in the scenery. Continue reading »
