I just died a little bit when I found out these are completely serious. No joke.

Fleece: one of many "mom wear" classics.

You may not realize it, but we here at Strollerderby have tons of pitch emails to sort through on a daily basis, most for products with very tenuous connections to parenting. (From an actual pitch we got: “Whether you are standing for hours handing out candy, walking with your kids in their quest for treats or dancing in uncomfortable costume shoes at Halloween parties… foot pain can be horrifyingly excruciating. No tricks: scare away the pain of tired, aching feet with Topricin Foot Therapy Cream.”) So when we were sent an email shilling “Comfortable Colorful Denim for Busy Moms,” I started thinking: does the world still think that motherhood means wearing Mom Jeans?

Turns out, the answer is yes. I polled my over 3,000 Facebook friends and asked them, “What clothing screams ‘mom’ to you?” (besides the obvious: glittery thongs). Remember mom pants?  Those high-waisted, narrow legged slacks that were so popular a few decades ago? We wore them back then because we didn’t have much of a choice.  That’s just what pants looked like.  We certainly didn’t know they were ugly and would someday take their place alongside parachute pants and off-the-shoulder sweaters as examples of what was wrong with 80′s fashion.

But even into the 90′s and beyond, some of us of a certain age continued to wear mom pants.  Mom pants are comfortable and perfect for reigning in that extra girth that so often remains after childbirth.  Maybe they aren’t fashion forward, but at least they don’t cause the unsightly muffin top that even thin girls get when wearing those tight, low-rise pants that barely conceal their underpants. In an interview with Today Show’s Meredith Viera (short video after the jump), President Obama defended the jeans he wore to throw out the first pitch at in last week’s major league baseball All-Star game.

The jeans — a little too faded and riding a little high in the waist and at the ankle — betrayed our handsome president’s nerdy roots. (The super white running shoes and the zipped up jacket with a fitted waist only added to the cringe factor, but nobody’s talking about that, so I won’t either. )

At some point this season, if we haven’t already, we moms will walk into the bathing suit section of a major department store in search of attractive swimwear that’s also stretchable enough to cover every itty-bitty problem area on our aging, child-bearing bodies. We’ll pore through the bikinis and tankinis, the one-pieces and the cover-ups, and eventually find ourselves drawn to the inevitable: the ultimate mom bathing suit.
