Pope John Paul II needs one more miracle to become a saint.
It was just announced that Pope John Paul II has a date set for his beatification process that may end up with him officially becoming a saint. With the beatification date set for May 1, 2011, he just needs one more documented miracle to become a full saint.
The current leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed that a French nun had been miraculously cured from Parkinson’s disease directly through the prayers and intentions of John Paul. But a second confirmed miracle is needed for sainthood to be official.
One of my first memories of Pope John Paul was his assassination attempt in 1981. I was just 7 years old at the time so while my memory is a little blurry about the actual coverage, I clearly remember my small Brooklyn neighborhood in tears over the event.
Shortly before that in 1979, my husband as a child traveled along with his parents, eight brothers and sister to Shea Stadium to hear Pope John Paul say Mass. From what I’m told, it down poured and the family was entirely soaked. My mother-in-law says that her kids were dripping wet and she started to wonder if she made a wise choice traipsing them all out that day. But then the Pope emerged in his Popemobile … and so did the sun. She felt that was a sign.
But was it a miracle?
17-month-old Bronson Staker’s mom, Sara, only turned her back on her son in the tub for a minute. An older brother distracted her. Anyone with more than one kid knows this situation all too well. Yet, in just that moment, Sara turned back to find her child lying face down in the tub. At the hospital, Bronson was pronounced dead on arrival. But doctors tried a “Hail Mary” last-ditch effort to possibly save the baby by freezing him back to life. Continue reading »
Even at a distance and as blurry as it was, the video was horrifying enough to make any parent’s — heck, any person’s — blood run cold: A mom and baby are waiting for an oncoming train when the stroller starts to roll. The mother stumbles, and the stroller falls onto the tracks and gets run over by the train.
Earlier this week that mother, Shweta Verma, a dentist and mom to 6-month-old Saurish, talked with Today’s Matt Lauer about the incident.
Though Rinku Rai knew she was pregnant, the very pregnant 30-year-old didn’t realize that she was in labor.
Traveling by train with her husband and four-year-old daughter to visit relatives, Rai went to use the Tata-Chapra Express bathroom. What you might not know about trains in India is this: The toilets empty directly onto the tracks.

When Hannah Clark of Wales was just two years old doctors transplanted a second heart into the girl to make up for the original heart’s inability to function. For 10 years the second heart beat but in that time Hannah developed tumors and could no longer take the immunosuppressive drugs that prevented her body from rejecting the donor heart.

The old adage, never wake a sleeping baby never sounded so good to a parent. A mom in Yonkers, NY, left her son asleep in their basement rather than wake him and send him up to bed – only to have a violent storm rip through their neighborhood and destroy the boy’s bedroom.
