Mary Clarity is a military mom who misses her husband, who is six and half months into a deployment. This Christmas, she’s on her own with their two year old daughter and a two month old old baby. Counting backwards, you see that she got to be hugely pregnant, deliver a baby and care for a newborn all by herself, also while taking care of a two year old.
But rather than sink into a well deserved bout of seasonal petulance, she decided to record this very sweet and funny song and post it on YouTube. It’s lifted the spirits and tickled the funny bones of many other women with deployed spouses. For a little more about Mary, check out her greeting at Rants from Mommyland.

Many companies offer service men and women discounts for Veterans Day.
Companies around the country will honor Veterans Day this November 11 by doing a little something nice for our country’s veterans. From big box retailers to amusement parks and restaurants, corporate America will offer a token of appreciation to members of the military past and present.
Home Depot, Lowe’s, Big Lots and Dollar General will offer 10% discounts on Veteran’s Day to all active, reserve, honorably discharged, or retired military personnel and their immediate family members. DISH Network will be offering new subscribers to its service who are vets a $100 American Express Prepaid Rewards card.
Many national restaurant chains will be offering free meals to vets, including Applebee’s, Chili’s, Golden Corral, and McCormick & Schmicks. Others are offering special “buy one, get one free” deals like Uno’s Chicago Grill and T.G.I. Friday’s. Those looking to start the day off right can get a free donut from Krispy Kreme. Add a free six-inch sub from Subway, and veterans will have breakfast, lunch and dinner covered.
Guaranteed tear-jerker, but are surprise reunions good for military kids?
There’s something that isn’t quite right about surprise reunions between deployed soldiers and their families. Especially when those reunions involve a parent and child. Especially when those reunions are uploaded on YouTube or used as the basis of entertainment, as is the case for two new reality shows, TLC’s “Surprise Homecoming,” and Lifestime’s “Coming Home.”
The unscripted script goes something like this: child is lured to supposed event for military families. After somehow being featured front-and-center at the event, the crowd starts cheering. Child looks around to see what the big deal is. No, wait, could it be? That figure in the distance. Face goes from surprise to disbelief to raw, desperate emotions. Child runs to parent, everyone’s crying — them, the audience, you, producers, camera crew. Everyone.
Parent and child are interviewed afterward, credits roll. Happy ending. But is it really happy? Continue reading »
There's nothing like a hug from man's best friend!
Anyone who has ever loved a dog understands the bond between a human and their pup. It’s unbreakable and unconditional. Even if the owner is away for months, they will never forget them.
My black lab pup goes completely crazy when I come home, even if I’m only gone 15 minutes. She jumps up on me and hugs me with both paws around my neck. I honestly get a better greeting from her than my kids!
So when I saw the video of a military service member reuniting with his dog after being away on duty for over nine months, I couldn’t help but think of my puppy. Continue reading »
On the TODAY show this morning, Meredith Vierra sat down with the Roberts family, who are facing their third Christmas without their Dad. Casey Roberts, husband to Denise and father of daughter Kaylin and son Keeghan, was killed in Afghanistan in 2008. The segment, called “Getting to the Heart of Christmas,” was meant to be somber and touching, and the pre-recorded portion certainly was. But as soon as Vierra began the live interview, it was clear that Keeghan’s sense of holiday joy was alive and well.
If you’re impatient, forward to the 3:00 mark. You won’t be able to stop yourself from smiling as Vierra asks, “So what are your dreams and hopes for this Christmas, Denise?” and Roberts responds, “I just wanna see my kids smile… sometimes we get lost in the grief,” as her son Keeghan dances around, shouting that he can see himself on TV. It’s a great testament to the way kids can really lighten the load when times are tough. Continue reading »
When Wisconsin mom Johan Ortiz went into labor, she didn’t panic. She didn’t rush to the hospital. Instead, against her doctor’s orders, she got in her SUV and went to pick up her husband. He was in a plane, flying toward an airport three hours away from her Milwaukee home.
