Is it more shocking when a 12-year-old girl is the masked face behind an armed robbery?
I don’t know about you, but when I hear most stories about crimes like assault or murder, I assume a man is the culprit. It’s some kind of reverse sexism, I’m sure, but I’m also kind of sure most statistics would point to those of the XY persuasion in the hot seat in those cases.
That’s why when I read about a girl committing armed robbery, I’m kind of shocked. Especially when I read that she’s just 12-years-old. Shocked and saddened, actually.
A 12-year-old girl in Highland, Mich., demanded cash from a convenience store on Monday while brandishing a nine-millimeter gun and is being charged as a juvenile with armed robbery.

Remember Kathleen Edward, the little girl with Huntington’s Disease who was cyberbullied by her neighbor, Jennifer Petkov? It turns out, Edward and her deceased mother, Laura, aren’t the only victims of Petkov’s twisted rage. Trenton, Michigan resident Tana Boling says of Petkov, “Last summer, she threatened me. Told me she was going to kill me.”
Last Wednesday, Petkov got close to doing just that. Boling says “when she was crossing the street to talk to Rebecca Rose, little Kathleen Edward’s grandmother, next thing she knew she was dodging a car.” Continue reading »

7-year-old Kathleen Edward of Trenton, Michigan, suffers (and will likely die) from Huntington’s Disease. Kathleen has been mercilessly mocked by a grown woman, Jennifer Petkov, who has posted photoshopped images to Facebook of Kathleen’s mother, Laura – who also died of Huntington’s Disease - including “Laura in the arms of the grim reaper” and Kathleen with her “face superimposed over a skull and crossbones,” reports Jezebel.
All this over an unanswered text about a birthday party. If you haven’t yet come to the conclusion that cyberbulling is out-of-control – and that adults are largely responsible for some of the most reprehensible behavior online toward children, I suggest you get on board, asap. Continue reading »

Need a feel good story today? This is it.
Mr. Dompierre’s sixth grade class worked hard at collecting canned goods for the hungry. They worked so hard, they won the “Can-a-thon” competition held by a local TV station and earned a pizza party for their class.
The Ishpeming, MI students weren’t done giving, though. They decided to donate their reward, too. Several pizzas were donated to the local Salvation Army and will be given to families without the means to cook their food.

The destruction of the World Trade Center and other attacks of September 11, 2001 have got to be some of the most horrendous acts of senseless violence ever to take place in the United States. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would paint those cowardly acts as honorable or noble. And yet, some high school students in Michigan — identified as Arab-Americans, no less — have been accused of doing just that.
Most states have some form of protection for women who choose to breastfeed their children. California, for example, along with forty-two other states, specifically allows women to breastfeed in any public or private location where they have a right to be. In Michigan, women who are breastfeeding do not have quite the protection accorded them in California but they are, at least, exempt from laws concerning public indecency. A bill currently under consideration in the state house would change that, if passed.
