Vick will never be a role model because athleticism does not supersede cruelty in my book.
The news today in the sports world is that Nike has sealed a new endorsement deal with convicted animal abuser and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. After releasing him of his contract four year ago when he was arrested and convicted, they apparently think he will now be a positive role model for their company.
What are they thinking or are they thinking at all?
Unequal Technologies think Michael Vick is a good role model but dog fighting is an utterly inhumane crime.
It looks like Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is now the face of Unequal Technologies, a company that manufactures sports equipment and footwear. As my colleague Meredith wrote about earlier, it is Vick’s first endorsement deal since being reinstated to the NFL following an 18-month prison term. After serving time, Vick wants to branch out and put his past behind him.
The big question looming, of course, is does he deserve a second chance? And will Unequal Technologies profit from making him their spokesman?
In 2007, Vick was convicted of operating an illegal dog fighting operation known as “Bad Newz Kennels” that spanned states. He not only financed the operation, but directly participated in dog fights and executions. Continue reading »

Do you teach your children about the importance of forgiveness? That everyone deserves a second chance? In that case, will your family stand in line to purchase anything by Unequal Technologies knowing that a man convicted of running a brutal dogfighting ring out of his house is its new celebrity spokesman?

As has been widely reported, President Obama called the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles this week and they talked about, among other things, Michael Vick, his amazing season, and second chances. President Obama thinks they’re good, those second chances, and he thinks it’s good that after serving a 19 month prison term for dog fighting Vick was able to leave prison and get a job. After all, a lot of African American men leaving our prisons can’t.
Well, Tucker Carlson has made it known that he’s for second chances, except when he’s against them. In Michael Vick’s case, he’s against them. Because, he says, Vick sentenced dogs to death.
But wait: Is Carlson a vegan? A big animal rights activist? But more than that little bit of philosophical inconsistency on Carlson’s part (which goes hand in glove with being anti abortion and pro-death penalty, I might add). I wonder what he teaches his kids — that you only get a second chance if what you’ve done isn’t so bad? That once you’ve done something bad you can never do anything good again?

The former Atlanta Falcon, disgraced when his role running a dog-fighting ring was exposed, has reportedly left his job at a construction company (part of his parole from prison) to work with the Boys and Girls Club in Newport News, Va., his hometown. Continue reading »
