New York City has only 13 home birth midwives, and 7 of them are in danger of losing their licenses.
State law requires all home birth midwives to have agreements with obstetricians at nearby hospitals who will back them up and handle medical emergencies with their patients. St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan was the official back-up hospital for more than half of New York City’s midwives until it closed this week.
Now the midwives are having trouble finding a new hospital that will take them in. Obstetricians, it seems, are not eager to sign on for back-up duty.
The pill is 50 years old, and everyone’s throwing a party. Since it’s introduction, millions of women have had control over their fertility and their lives in ways that were totally unknown to the world before.
But it isn’t great for everybody. Today in Salon, Geraldine Sealey shares her own misadventures with the Pill. Her story sounds a lot like many, many whispered conversations I’ve been part of about how hormonal birth control isn’t all it’s promised to be.

When the Lancet fully retracted Andrew Wakefield’s controversial study linking autism to vaccines, most of the scientific community breathed a huge sigh of relief. Now we can move on to other topics, right? Like finding a real cure for autism?
Not quite yet. Some people stood right by Wakefield and his controversial research. And Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey came out swinging, calling the Lancet’s retraction “censorship”.

Studying 10 areas of California, researchers at UC Davis found a link between kids with autism and parents with above average levels of education. While also seeking environmental factors precluding autism, the study found none.
