Ken — many Kens — gathered in downtown Los Angeles to collectively break up with the iconic Mattel doll, Barbie. Seems Ken’s got standards and Barbie is not living up to them. The break-up has nothing to do with beauty, or brains (or lack of brains) or Barbie spending too much time surfing and being a veterinarian with a realistic figure instead of pulling off her clothes and laying, stiff-legged on top of an also naked Ken. Does this doll look dangerous to you?
A few months ago, a new toy was released that made my ten-year-old a little wistful for her younger years. She thinks she’s too old for it, but Mattel’s new Barbie Video Girl certainly caught her attention.
Perhaps you’ve seen it? She looks like a normal Barbie except for the fact that she’s got a real working video camera in her chest and a screen on her back. How cool is that?
According to the FBI, not cool at all. In a leaked memo linked at Jezebel, the FBI warns that this seemingly harmless toy could be a threat to children.
So, what could Barbie possibly have done to warrant that kind of warning? It’s the video camera, of course. In the wrong hands, it could be used to surreptitiously record child pornography.
A reviewer at Tech Crunch seems to have been the first to grasp the nefarious possibilities of a video camera hidden in a doll. In a video rant posted on the site last summer, Paul Carr goes off, saying the doll is “child abuse waiting to happen.”
Bratz dolls redefine demure
Barbie did her best to get rid of her rivals, but the Bratz dolls are back and coming to a store near you.
If you are the parent of a young girl, you probably already know the story, but let’s recap: In 2008, a jury ruled that Bratz maker MGA Entertainment had essentially stolen the concept for Bratz dolls from Mattel. After that, the dolls we love to hate pretty much disappeared from the toy store shelves. But in July, a federal appeals court overturned that earlier ruling and cleared the way for MGA to resume manufacturing the dolls. Continue reading »

Those girls may be making a comeback soon, but there are some new dolls in town that make those pouty-lipped ladies look positively preppy. Mattel’s latest Barbie line is called the “Barbie Basic Collection” and features 12 dolls dressed in something many women couldn’t live without: The little black dress. But one of these dolls appears to be sporting something else women have grown quite fond of: Breast implants.
The Barbie in question is Model No. 10, featuring “African American skin tone, a striking Little Black Dress with a plunging neckline, and long sleek hair.” Her face we’ve seen before – it’s called the Desiree sculpt and first appeared on Barbie dolls back in 2002.
