Little Maxwell's wish was to make a very big mess
Usually tears of happiness aren’t shed when a building blows up. But a 7-year-old got to push the detonator to implode a grain silo in Toledo, Ohio, and it just might make you tear up.
That’s because Maxwell Hinton is suffering from a form of cancer called Neuriblastoma and has long wanted to blow up a building. The Make-a-Wish Foundation helped him make his dream come true.
The building was already scheduled to be demolished, according to Yahoo. Maxwell did the dirty deed in front of an audience of 30,000 people.

Is Ina Garten busy with book signings like this one?
Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten has gotten herself into a bit of a PR pickle this week. The celebrity chef apparently received a request from Enzo, a 6 year old boy with terminal cancer who had become a fan of her Food Network show while watching it in bed with his mom. When Enzo, who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, was contacted by The Make a Wish Foundation, he wished to make a meal with the Barefoot Contessa. Ina Garten turned him down—TWICE.
Ina’s people cited “Scheduling Conflicts” on both occasions. But her rejection has spurred a certain amount of outrage. How can you not make time for someone who has so little time left—a child, no less? And a child who, when given the choice of anyone on the planet, chooses YOU? Enzo, tragically, supposedly asked his parents, “Why doesn’t she want to meet me?”
Apparently this kind of celebrity snubbing happens a lot more often than one might hope.
It's all about the happiness
Did everyone see the Christmas Glee? When the simple Brittany asks a Mall Santa to make her boyfriend Artie walk for Christmas? And then the lady football coach dresses up as Santa to tell her it can’t happen? And then for Christmas Artie gets these electronic legs designed and built by Israeli scientists? And bif bam boom Artie can walk with them? That’s a great TV Christmas story.
In real life, that probably wouldn’t happen, at least not so fast. But if you’re looking for a miracle story the Make-a-Wish Foundation, that year round not-so-secret Santa, gives us plenty each year with their gifts of special experiences for kids fighting childhood cancer. There’s just one Cold Stone Creamery in my town, and I’m so thankful that it’s on the other side of town. Because that chocolate peanut butter mish-mash thing they do? Dangerously hard to resist.
But tomorrow is a day to indulge guilt-free. Stop in at any Cold Stone Creamery to make a donation to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and you’ll get a free “like-it” sized sample of Jack’s Creation: Sweet cream ice cream mixed with brownies and rainbow sprinkles and topped with caramel. Yum.
Proceeds will go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, an organization that works to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Do something good, eat something sweet. That’s a win/win in my book.

Finding Nemo made you cry? Then don’t read on about what Pixar’s done now.
The movie company got a call recently – a ten-year-old with terminal cancer wanted to see Up. Only Colby Curtin was too sick to be taken to a movie theater for a screening.
So the company did the unheard of. They let go one DVD of the only-in-theaters movie, sending it with a Pixar employee (on hand to keep the movie off the streets) to Huntington Beach, Calif. for a private in-home screening at Colby’s house.
Seven hours after she watched the movie, little Colby died. She got what she wanted – she’d promised her mom she’d hang on long enough to see the movie.
It’s such a sad story, I almost didn’t write about it here on Babble. But what prompted me to was the news that this wasn’t some Make a Wish Foundation gig. Continue reading »
