Justine Siegal is a true role model for girls everywhere.
Spring training is opening with a bang this year in more ways than one. As our boys get ready for Little League baseball and our girls for Little League softball, Cleveland native Justine Siegal is living a dream.
Siegal, the first woman to coach men’s professional baseball, serving as a first-base coach for the Brockton Rox in 2009, will become the first woman to throw batting practice to a Major League team.
On her blog, she writes:
“I grew up wanting to be a Cleveland Indian. This is a dream come true. I want to show that baseball is a game for all and that both boys and girls love this game. My throwing BP is proof that dreams really can come true.”

While many athletes stubbornly insist they only want to be judged for what they do professionally, when their accomplishments make them stand out among their teammates, it’s often hard to also ignore what they do off the court or field. And these days, there are sadly few athletes who are in the glare of the spotlight for good rather than bad. Whether it’s performance-enhancing or recreational drugs or extramarital affairs or illegal extracurricular activities, it seems to be a somewhat dark period in the world of professional sports.
On the flip side is Jackie Robinson, the first black Major League Baseball player. He started with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 and is credited with being instrumental in ending racial segregation in professional baseball, as black players had been previously relegated to the Negro leagues for decades beforehand. It wasn’t just his talent on the field as a second baseman that helped him rise to the rank of legend but the strength of his character, which is nearly unmatched almost 40 years since his untimely death that has made his legacy so enduring.
If you have to spend the summer unemployed, you could have it a lot worse: a couple of former federal employees who were laid off in January have spent the summer on the road with their six-month-old. They’re at number twenty-two on a trip to hit all thirty Major League Baseball ballparks.
