What if you’re not a helicopter or attachment parent, or a tiger mom, or have no free range kids? What if you’re a mix of all?
Unless you’ve been living in mass isolation, you’ve undoubtedly heard about the different types of parenting theories being discussed, outlined, and debated ten-fold these days. Maybe you’ve even taken a quiz. Are you an attachment parent, helicopter parent, or are you raising free-range kids? Maybe you have been called permissive because you let your kids take a mental health day off from school when they weren’t necessarily sick, or possibly you even let your kid eat all her Halloween candy in one night! (You couldn’t be a tiger mom because you live in America, right?)

Today, October 6, 2010, is International Walk to School Day.
In 1997, the Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the very first National Walk Our Children to School Day. This was in Chicago and the event was modeled after a similar one in the United Kingdom. The point was to bring awareness of the need for walkable communities.
Today, the idea that walking to school is good for kids and communities has spread across the country with millions of students in all 50 states participating in International Walk to School Day. So, did your kid walk to school today? Continue reading »
“Don’t talk to strangers” – it’s a rule that many of us learned early and have been quick to pass on to our kids. I remember telling my husband shortly after our first child was born after an unfamiliar car and driver sat parked outside our house for an hour one night, “Suddenly, every one I don’t know is a potential predator.”
But as Lenore Skenazy points out in a post at Parentdish, stranger danger not only doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, it might be dangerous.

This past Saturday was Lenore Skenazy’s Take Your Kids To The Park And Leave Them There Day. All across America, parents were urged to take their kids to a local playground and leave them to play amongst themselves for a short time.

In a quiet corner of our city sits a gem, a historic park designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, complete with duck pond and an tall, metal roller slide that’s irresistible to kids. When we showed up to play for the first time this spring, the roller slide was gone. Its removal has parents buzzing — about half are glad they won’t have to drag their kids away from it anymore, the other half are really sad to see it go.
By today’s standards, it really wasn’t risk-free. But as Lenore Skenazy points out in her her Salon piece The War on Children’s Playgrounds, nothing is. But in our effort to make playgrounds as safe as humanely possible, Skenazy says that we’re also eliminating the fun.
