While you're spinning that teacup you might just be exposing yourself to some serious lead.
It seems the It’s A Small World ride isn’t the first thing that’ll kill you at Disneyland. A new group claims it’s all the lead you’re being exposed to while at what is arguably the world’s most famous amusement park.
Jezebel led me to an L.A. Times article that says Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation has filed a lawsuit after high levels of lead were found in stuff all over the park.
As Jezebel says, “it seems that the goofy shot of you grabbing the Sword in the Stone statue at Disneyland is actually a picture of you exposing yourself to high levels of lead.” Funny, but apparently true.

We all know breakfast is important. It gets your day started, nourishes your body, helps you lose weight, improves concentration…and protects against lead absorption in your tissues.
OK, that last one isn’t such common knowledge. But it’s a real thing in the world, according to a new study out of China. In a 6-month study, Chinese scientists showed that children who ate breakfast every day lowered their blood levels of lead by 15%, compared with those who skipped it.
That’s a pretty big advantage for a small effort.
Lead poisoning in American children has decreased so radically over the past generation that the CDC set a goal of eradicating it by 2010. Sadly, like polio, the final pockets of it have proven harder to combat.
Lead poisoning has become rare, but it’s by no means extinct yet. The main risk isn’t toys from China or contaminated soil. It’s our old nemesis, lead paint.
The 2008 law that imposed strict limits on lead in childrens’ products has had an unintended effect. According to the results of a recently published investigation by the Associated Press, some Chinese toy manufactures have complied with the new regulations by replacing that toxic metal with…an even more toxic metal, cadmium. The Environmental Health Sciences Organization has been studying the effects of certain vinegars on children and what they have discovered could potentially change the way many of us cook. According to their findings, the small amounts of lead found in some balsamic and other red wine vinegars can be hazardous to children when consumed regularly. By “regularly,” they mean one tablespoon daily. And by “hazardous,” they mean it can cause learning and behavioral disorders and diminished IQ. Continue reading »
Next to air, water is the most essential element for human survival. Our bodies and brains need it to keep going and drinking enough of it can substantially reduce the risk of certain diseases. Because even mild dehydration can cause kids to lose focus and have difficulty with short-term memory, we urge them to drink up all day long. But if they are drinking from the fountains at school, there’s a chance they may be doing more harm than good. According to an Associated Press investigation, drinking water in thousands of schools in all 50 states has been found to have unsafe levels of contaminates including lead, pesticides and other toxins.
