Does this doll make the toy safety cut?
All of the toy recalls in the past few years, over things like cadmium and lead, can leave parents feeling somewhat overwhelmed when figuring out what to give kids for the holidays. I mean, those handmade wooden toys from Germany? Sure, that would be nice. But then there’s the holiday budget, which would leave room for a marble run and, perhaps, one and a half silk scarves. Won’t cut it!

Lead poisoning in American children has decreased so radically over the past generation that the CDC set a goal of eradicating it by 2010. Sadly, like polio, the final pockets of it have proven harder to combat.
Lead poisoning has become rare, but it’s by no means extinct yet. The main risk isn’t toys from China or contaminated soil. It’s our old nemesis, lead paint.
Remember rooting through your toy box for those Thomas the Train engines laced with lead back in 2007? Fast forward two years, and the government has finally settled on a $1.25 million fine for toy importer RC2 Corporation.
RC2 and subsidiary Learning Curve are getting off with saying they didn’t break the law knowingly as part of the agreement, but they’ll have to pay the mega fine. Continue reading »
Parents who stuck a pair of boots under the Christmas tree to get kids ready for winter might want to start unwrapping. A major recall has been announced on kids Timberland boots.
Sold this fall, the boots were all manufactured in Thailand, and the logo stamped onto the children’s boot’s insoles contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. Continue reading »
The Environmental Health Sciences Organization has been studying the effects of certain vinegars on children and what they have discovered could potentially change the way many of us cook. According to their findings, the small amounts of lead found in some balsamic and other red wine vinegars can be hazardous to children when consumed regularly. By “regularly,” they mean one tablespoon daily. And by “hazardous,” they mean it can cause learning and behavioral disorders and diminished IQ. Continue reading »
Much to my chagrin, I have a soft place in my heart for Target. I’m never tempted to so much as glance at a Wal-Mart, but sometimes when I get an uncontrollable hankering for a cheap tank top, tile cleaner, and discount shampoo, I find myself in basking in the spacious neon glow of a Target, vaguely praying that no child in India lost a finger in the making of the three-dollar garment I’m about to purchase.
