It sounds like something you’d expect to read in a newspaper from the 50′s: Latino children are not as advanced, academically, as their White counterparts. Of course, the research done at UCLA, UC Berkeley, and the University of Pittsburgh does not simply say that White kids are inherently smarter than Latino kids; ideas like that were disproved long ago. Instead, the findings highlight the importance of parents in helping children succeed in school.
Sometimes we learn more about ourselves through the lens of another culture. For instance, who knew that Bert is a razor-toothed, screaming, jaundiced man with a giant flap of skin dangling horrifyingly from his neck. And who knew Ernie was such a perv. The Japanese knew, that’s who.
Whenever you’re in a specialized subculture, it can feel like the most useful of words take an absurdly long time to reach the pages of the dictionary. And as we all know, parenting is a specialized subculture.
