Kids with speech delays rejected by peers
It has been documented that kids who are slower to develop language are more likely to show “externalizing behaviors,” meaning outwardly-focused problems like verbal or physical aggression (as opposed to “internalizing behaviors” like being withdrawn or anxious).
But a new study in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry suggests that aggressive behavior might not be a direct cause of slower language.The researchers see a step in between, and it has to do with peers. Continue reading »
We’ve all read the advice to constantly stimulate your baby with talk — keeping up a ceaseless stream of updates and information, packing in every possible teachable moment. And quite frankly, sometimes I’ve even annoyed myself with the constant chatter: “Yes! Now we’re going to go get milk! Yes! The milk jug has BLUE on it! Milk comes from COWS!”
Apparently, I’m not the only one rolling my eyes and thinking “will you LISTEN to yourself, woman?” (Much as, I should note, I do love talking to them and think it’s helped them both develop good verbal skills). According to a new study from the United Kingdom, one quarter of boys have trouble learning to talk, and one in six babies of both sexes do.
A YouGov online survey of 1,015 parents found that 34 percent of girls versus only 27 percent of boys had said their first word before the age of nine months, and most children said their first word between the ages of 10 and 11 months. Only 4 percent of children had not said their first word by the age of three. Continue reading »

There’s something I’d like to get out of the way: I don’t care if my son’s frequent pacifier use results in the biggest, nastiest, crooked-tooth overbite — or renders him dead last among his contemporaries in complete sentence formation. That little plastic plug of love has been an integral part of our multi-pronged approach to the whole family getting really good sleep. Every dime I pay for orthodonic (and, apparently, language development) correction will have been worth it. Charge me double. I’ll pay that too.
