The Next Generation of Young — and Bad — Celebrity Role Models
We can argue until we’re blue in the face that parents alone should be their kids’ role models. But the reality is that unless your kids live in a bubble, they will likely and inevitably look up to public figures like athletes, politicians, musicians and actors for what they accomplish on the field, in office and on stage and screen — as well as what they do in their free time.
Some in the spotlight do their best to ensure their overall professional message is in line with the wholesome image they project on a daily basis, like, say, Taylor Swift and Daniel Radcliffe. Then there are those don’t seem to care much what others, or kids in particular, must think of them. Perhaps what’s hardest to explain to little ones is when the stars they admire are setting bad examples.
I don’t fault famous people for doing what they do for a living and then ensuring their private lives remain out of the glare of the paparazzi — in fact, I applaud them for that. But the ones who go after our kids’ wallets and then set poor examples by living their lives publicly and poorly is disgraceful.
Take a look at some of at some of the new worst young role models for kids (and no, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Heidi Montag, Tiger Woods, Snooki, Ke$ha, Taylor Momsen and the cast of Teen Mom aren’t on the list — they’re old news):
Young Laura Fontana As “Mini Lady Gaga” Now A World Sensation (Video)
I missed 8-year old YouTube sensation Laura Fontana’s intriguing performance as Lady Gaga for the Brazilian talent show Qual e o Seu Talento last year, zooming her into the spotlight and viral video world. She’s still making videos known as the Mini Lady Gaga, and is becoming quite the sensation.
So, I watched the Bad Romance video featured below and thought she was adorable – no doubt- and she can sing, but. Yikes. Not sure I can say much more. You can watch the video and decide for yourself. I just hope she’s having fun with it and it’s her own choice to be like Lady Gaga. (I’m remembering the days I wanted to be Tiffany or Debbie Gibson and sometimes Madonna, so.) Continue reading »

Lady Gaga: hero for the bullied?
Lady Gaga’s camp released a promo today for her concert film, “The Monster Ball Tour,” debuting May 7th on HBO. In an intimate dressing room conversation filmed during her February dates at Madison Square Garden, the then 24-year-old megastar reveals her desire to be a Queen for her fans, many of whom she feels are tormented for being different. Gaga tells her backstage companions, “I just get so wrapped up when I do these benchmark shows, you know, ’cause I start to think about all the people that have tried to stop me…. I just sometimes feel like a loser kid in high school… and I have to tell myself I’m a superstar every morning so that I can get through this day and be for my fans what they need for me to be.” Continue reading »
Lady Gaga Sends C&D to Icecreamists Over Breast Milk Ice Cream

A costumed, Lady Gaga-inspired waitress tries Baby Gaga breast milk ice cream, served (ironically) with a bottle and teething biscuits.
They say there’s no such thing as bad press. We’ll see if that’s true for Icecreamists, the posh London ice cream parlor that has been under scrutiny of late for selling Baby Gaga breast milk ice cream. All prepared batches of the flavor were seized at the beginning of this month due to the threat of hepatitis contamination, but that hasn’t stopped pop singer Lady Gaga from sending Icecreamists a cease and desist letter.
Lady Gaga’s attorneys “sent the owners a legal letter asking them to stop using the name ‘Gaga’ in their ice cream, calling their concoction ‘deliberately provocative and, to many people, nausea-inducing,’ ” PopEater reports.
Proof that America’s squeamishness over breast milk rages on. Continue reading »
Little Girl Gets Lady Gaga’s Attention with Born This Way Cover

Lady Gaga on GMA this morning in a condom-inspired outfit. (Click continue reading for more on her message of kids and safe sex.)
Let’s just call this the week of the 10-year-old. First we were introduced to the soulful stylings of Heather Russell, and now – thanks to a tweet from Lady Gaga herself – this video of 10-year-old Miia Maria is making the rounds. Maria’s sound is also big and bluesy, but she seems to be using her voice in a less potentially damaging way than Russell.

Lady Gaga’s New Song Can’t Potty Train Toddlers But Her Older Stuff Can
I’m into Lady Gaga. And I take a lot of heat for it. But I really don’t care. Overexposed though she may be, she still comes off fresh and provocative. Uniquely unaffected. The real deal in an industry laden with posers. Regardless of whether or not you share my high opinion of Lady Gaga, one thing’s for sure. She’s got a new song out — “Born This Way.” And I’m sure that everyone will go, well, gaga over it. She seems to have the golden touch.
Yet despite that golden touch and despite the fact that I’m a big fan, “Born This Way” will never touch my personal Lady Gaga favorite. For it truly helped me potty train the triplets.
Kidz Bop: Do You Censor Your Kid’s Music?
Lots of kids, my own included, get their first introduction to popular music via Kidz Bop. Each Kidz Bop CD is a compilation of current hit songs sung by children instead of the original artist. The first one, which was released in 2000 and went gold in the U.S., included renditions of Britney Spears’ “Oops I Did it Again” and Christina Aguilera’s “What A Girl Wants.”
About a week ago, Kidz Bop #18 was released and, because the lineup includes songs by some of pop’s reigning bad girls, the Kidz Bop song editors had to work overtime to sanitize the lyrics to make them appropriate for little ears. Lady Gaga had to lose her cigarettes and drinks in “Telephone” and Madonna becomes a pop star instead of a virgin in Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister.” Snoop Dog’s entire contribution to Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” was dropped and Cascada’s “Evacuate The Dancefloor” feels really close instead of like an overdose.
