Not only was I given a black vinyl diaper bag filled with formula samples and coupons shortly after both of my babies were born, I was also heavily pressured by nurses at one hospital to feed my heavy baby (9 lb, 2 oz) formula from the get go — something about concerns over blood sugar that never developed. Even as committed as I was to breastfeeding, it was hard not to waver under all that pressure.
Breastfeeding advocates have long argued that those formula-friendly bags are nothing more than slick marketing that make it even harder for new moms to stick to nursing through those rough early days.

Two poignant pieces on breastfeeding today: Babble’s Katie Granju writes about not being able to breastfeed Baby Georgia because her milk never came in. Meanwhile, Salon’s Jessica Roake writes about her own nursing difficulties and how they made her feel judged by other nursing mothers.
A recent study told us that the sooner a woman gets pregnant again following a miscarriage, the better. But what this study did not take into account was emotional readiness. That’s why, says Tracy Clark-Flory at Salon, it’s so important to read the editorial that goes along with the study. There’s no proof that pregnancy outcomes will be affected if parents want to give themselves time to heal.

Most states have some form of protection for women who choose to breastfeed their children. California, for example, along with forty-two other states, specifically allows women to breastfeed in any public or private location where they have a right to be. In Michigan, women who are breastfeeding do not have quite the protection accorded them in California but they are, at least, exempt from laws concerning public indecency. A bill currently under consideration in the state house would change that, if passed.
Remember Ragnar Bengtsson, the Swedish man who set on breastfeeding his future children? The 26-year-old college student spent three hours a day getting cozy with a breast pump in hopes that he could urge some milk out of his breasts.
He thought it was worth a fair shot, saying, “Anything that doesn’t do any harm is worth trying out.”
Ragnar Bengtsson, 26, busts out a breast pump every three hours, priming is “breasts” in order to one day hopefully lactate for his future offspring.
As a student, Bengtsson’s lactation vigilance often means he’s must whip out the old breast pump in class.
“…it doesn’t really bother me if it makes people uncomfortable,” he said, “If they have issues with it that’s their problem.”
Of course moms should be allowed to breastfeed anywhere they want — and I mean anywhere — but if where they want to breastfeed is a no-parking zone? Well, they’ll have to just pay the fine if they get caught.
That’s what happened to a New York City couple, Enrique Valez and Marta Lily, who tried to schmooze their way out of a parking ticket, even though they pulled into a clearly marked no-standing zone. While Marta was nursing their 6-month-old, Enrique hopped out of the car to go around the corner and heat up a supplemental bottle. That’s when the parking authority came along — and was not sympathetic to their breastfeeding excuse.
