Gisele Breastfeeding Backlash! Even La Leche League Thinks She’s Out Of Line

I'm sure that bra has breastfeeding flaps.
Gisele has been known to say some pretty outlandish things. She told Vogue earlier this year that she thinks most pregnant women treat themselves as “garbage disposals,” so her ridiculous assertion that there should be a worldwide law forcing mothers to breastfeed should really have come as no surprise to any of us. But it appears that the backlash against her has come as a surprise to Gisele, who apologized for her comments on her blog, saying, “I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinions and I am not here to judge.”
Mmm-hmm.
Gisele’s ”hypocrisy is outrageous,” as I told the New York Post, given that she reportedly only breastfed her son for three weeks. Ostensibly, Gisele should be locked in jail for not adhering to her own breastfeeding fatwa. I mean, even I – a mere mortal – breastfed my daughter for two months. Get with the program, G-hissy! I think the only reason Gisele wants breastfeeding to be mandatory is because it helps women lose weight, and she can’t stand to look at fat people. After all, she did kung-fu up until three weeks before her son was born. What were you doing three weeks before your son was born, my fellow garbage disposals?
I’m not the only “real” mother mocking her arrogant stupidity. CBS News, The LA Times, and the Boston Globe have all covered the story, the Globe article featuring the best quote I’ve heard about this mess. Famed author Ayelet Waldman told them, “I think it’s far more important to pass a law mandating that all women are allowed to lie on their couches drinking root beer floats and reading novels for the entire nine months of the pregnancy.”
But perhaps the most shocking turn of events in this titillating affair is that even La Leche League thinks Gisele needs to get a grip. Executive Director Barbara Emanuel told the Post, “One mother doesn’t have to be wrong so that another mother can be right. There are lots of choices out there for women, and La Leche League respects those choices.”
Um, did the leader of the lactivist movement just publicly embrace formula feeding out of respect for her fellow womb-an? Holy nipple cream, I think she did. Continue reading »
Another Mom Asked to Stop Breastfeeding in Public
We’ve covered lots of stories in the past few months about moms getting flack for breastfeeding in public, and news items on the topic continue to crop up. Yesterday a Boston-area YMCA employee was reprimanded for asking a mother to stop breastfeeding her infant in the child-care area of the fitness center. Some employees were reportedly concerned about the other children seeing Elizabeth Gomez’s exposed breast, but the worker in question cited the “no food or beverages” policy as an excuse to ask her to leave. (Massachusetts passed a law in April 2009 providing for breastfeeding in any space open to the general public.)
The Stir posted an open letter by Gomez, in which she states that when informed about the incident, the director of the YMCA threatened to revoke Gomez’s membership. The letter says: Continue reading »
Breast Milk Cheese Angers La Leche Leader
Situations like the following make La Leche League seem stern, humorless and lactationally pedantic. Some members of the breastfeeding support group are scolding New York chef Daniel Angerer for turning his wife’s breast milk into cheese.
No, it’s not because his extreme locavore offerings are gagging those of us too small-minded to crave our own curdled leftovers. Rather, his cheese balls are, they say to DNAInfo.com, taking food from the mouths of babies. Continue reading »

Video of the Breastfeeding Doll
You’ve heard about the Breastfeeding Doll, aka Bebé Glotón? You’ve seen the pictures. But now you can see the video.
Lots of controversy has spawned since we wrote about Bebé Glotón here (after first reading about the doll on Thingamababy).
Seeing the doll on this promotional video might help to put that to rest. Or not. Take a look. Continue reading »
A Breastfeeding Doll? WTF?
Yes, you heard right. I wish it was a joke, and maybe it is and I didn’t notice. But all signs point to this being real. From Thingamababy:
“Bebé Glotón is a infant doll made by Berjuan, a toy maker in Spain, for the express purpose of promoting breastfeeding. The idea is to impress upon kids that breastfeeding is natural.”
Hey, sounds great, right? But for me, the weird part is that your child would attach some sort of breastfeeding vest that the doll can suckle. Or as Thingamababy puts it, “a colorful bra-like halter-top featuring flowers over the nipple area.” Either way, I vote weird. Continue reading »
