Why Toddlers Ask “Why?”
As any parent of a toddler will tell you, a child this age has two favorite words: “No” and “why.” While both words can be exasperating, the dreaded “why” is especially vexing. This is because “why” often requires a more thoughtful response than “Because I said so.”
But what is really going on with a child who repeatedly asks “why?” If you think they are doing it for the obvious reason - that they really want to know why - congratulations! You figured out something all by yourself that it took an assistant professor of psychology two whole studies to determine. Continue reading »

Here Be Dragons: Where Your Kids are on the Internet
My five-year-old recently used some of her carefully hoarded birthday money to buy herself a Webkinz. She generously bought one for her little sister, too. The girls have spent the past week naming, cuddling and grooming this fluffy stuffed critters. They’ve made collars and bracelets and hats for them, all with matching sparkly beads and ribbon.
Luckily for me, I don’t think either girl has realized yet that there’s a Webkinz website where they can extend their play into the Intertubes. It’s only a matter of time, though. Continue reading »

Fat Pride Community Takes a Stand on Health Care
Most of the recent press about weight has focused on losing it. In spite of (or maybe because of?) a $30 billion a year weight-loss industry, Americans are getting fatter. Kids are gaining weight even faster than adults.
Doctors, educators and politicians have been working to fight this trend with changes to school lunch menus and projects like Operation Pull Your Own Weight, which has kids do pull-ups to stay fit. As these experts have raised the alarm, a cultural gestalt has begun around eating healthier foods. Family kitchens all over the country have been turning away from candy and toward more fruits and vegetables in their diets.
Now, the New York Times reports on some fat, happy people who are pushing back. Continue reading »

“Tough Love” is Good for Kids
A British study has concluded that a “tough love” approach to parenting brings out the best in kids. The study showed that kids whose parents were engaged in their lives and set clear rules and expectations had the most “character”.
According the report’s author, Jen Lexmond, “It is confidence, warmth and consistent discipline that matter most.” Continue reading »
