Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg
Facebook sees itself as having lots of educational potential. They just need the right students to whom they can teach. To Facebook, that might mean friending your kids. You know, the ones under the age of 13. You know, the ones who pretty much everyone agrees shouldn’t be on there in the first place.
There’s little doubt Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is all for education; he pledged $100 million to schools in Newark, New Jersey, last year (never mind that it coincided with the PR nightmare for him that was The Social Network; philanthropy is still philanthropy).
Earlier this month the 27-year-old college dropout gazillionaire said at an education forum that “education is the clearly the biggest thing that will drive how the economy improves over the long term.”

Facebook teams up with Microsoft to rid the web of illegal images.
You might not expect to hear this, but Facebook – the largest photo-sharing site on the Internet – has been a haven for pedophiles, who upload “several thousand registered illegal images” to the site each day, according to the New York Times. As you probably know, Facebook as a corporation has been stringent about removing offensive images from its site, so much so that it has removed more than one image of a breastfeeding mother from its servers. Now they’ve teamed up with Microsoft, which “has refined a technology it created called PhotoDNA” that can identify images used by pedophiles “and cull through large amounts of data quickly and accurately enough to police the world’s largest online services.” Continue reading »
According to UK’s The Observer, biological parents are increasingly using Facebook and other social networking sites to track down the children they relinquished through adoption.
As I’ve written before on Strollerderby, it’s time for full disclosure in adoption. But full disclosure doesn’t mean presenting a child with information he or she never requested — or is not emotionally able to handle.
As an adoptee who did not want to be found by biological relatives, I can only imagine how upsetting it would have been for me as a teenager to be contacted out of the blue via Facebook. Adoptees had no choice in the matter of being relinquished for adoption so it’s important that they have control over the decision of whether or not to search for biological family or be found. Experts, make up your mind already! I’m getting confused.
Didn’t we just read a couple of weeks ago in “The New York Times” that social networking was bad for kids? Experts claimed that all that time online was preventing our children from forming meaningful relationships.
Now “The Los Angeles Times” has published a story which quotes an expert who says that children who spend lots of time on social media sites are “the healthiest psychologically.” Huh? Continue reading »
A New Jersey middle school principal is proposing a ban on social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter for middle school students.
Anthony Orsini of Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood, N.J. sent a letter to parents urging them to keep their children off of Facebook and other social networking sites.
“It is time for every single member of the school community to take a stand. There is absolutely positively no reason for any middle school student to be part of a social networking site,” wrote Orsini, who appeared on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” this morning to spread the word.
