I recently wrote a post about how movies I loved as teen and tween are totally different when viewed again as an adult. Example? Fast Times at Ridgemont High was the coolest thing in the history of ever when I was twelve. Now? It’s horrifying. A freshman girl sleeping around, hating herself, and getting an abortion? Gah! Not funny to me! Where are her parents?!
Sigh… I know. I’m old and should lighten up.
But in going back and revisiting these old movies, I found many that were even better than I remembered. And I can’t wait to share them with my kids when the time comes. I checked Common Sense Media to see at what age some of these movies would be appropriate. I usually agree with them, but even if I don’t, it’s always a good starting point for figuring out if a movie will be OK for my kiddos’ age range.
Here are ten movies that were better than I remembered, when viewed as adult:
Today's adults love the kids stuff they grew up with -- like hula hoops!
We talk a lot about kids acting more and more like grown-ups. They watch prime-time TV, wear make-up, dress like cocktail waitresses. But adults are borrowing heavily from kids, too. Can you blame them? Some kids things are too good to give up.
So what if you’re no longer dependent on your mom for a ride. Who cares if you shave daily and have a mortgage? Stuff that makes life for kids better can also make life for adults better. Continue reading »

Geena Davis knew there was something wrong with media for kids when she started watching what her daughter was watching. With her two year old on her lap, she would watch G-rated videos and children’s television, getting increasingly disturbed. Where were all the female characters? And what was with the few there were? When she brought this up with people in Hollywood, they all dismissed her concerns. She’d say, ”Hey, have you ever noticed how few female characters there seem to be in G-rated movies and things for kids?” And they pretty much across the board would say, “No. No, that’s not true anymore. That’s been fixed.”
That’s when Davis realized her personal views weren’t going to change any minds. She wanted to show people it wasn’t about subjective impressions, but real numbers: data that could not be ignored. So she raised some cash and started The Geena Davis Institute For Gender and Media. The institute recently released a major study, and the results aren’t pretty.

Good programs, great commercials!
In case your children don’t watch enough TV — or don’t spend enough time being advertised to — your family is in luck. A new TV channel, The Hub, is preparing to launch.

As our children get older, we often find that we have to make adjustments in the way we conduct ourselves. Where it might be perfectly okay to tell a dirty joke in front of a little baby, telling that same joke in front of an adolescent is a whole different story. The Wizard of Oz is featured as today’s Google Doodle on the search engine’s home page. What’s so special about this old movie that it would merit such an honor? Well, it was 71 years ago today that classic film starring Judy Garland made its big screen debut and began a long tradition of scaring the pants of little kids.
The Wizard of Oz was a mighty big deal when I was growing up. In the days before cable television and DVDs, the only way to see it was to wait for it to be shown on television. Once a year, I brought my blanket to the living room and settled in on the couch for a night of excitement, wonder and pure terror. The blanket, of course, was for hiding my face when I couldn’t bear to look. For a kid in the 1970′s that movie was wicked scary. Continue reading »
