Sometimes children need to be saved from themselves. I know Foster Kline, M.D. and the Love & Logic parents out there believe that kids should learn from their own mistakes, but with the many questionable costumes available on the market, sometimes you just have to step in and tell your kid, “Sorry, honey, but that outfit is going to be something you regret for the rest of your life. For realz.”

Now, if only there were Costume Police who could save children from their parents!!

Halloween is more than six weeks away, but if your kids are anything like mine, they’re already talking about what they want to dress up as for Halloween. My 8-year-old  daughter can’t decide between Hermione and Hannah Montana while my 5-year-old wants to dress up as either Tinkerbell or a Zhu Zhu pet.

I guess I should be relieved that they’re not interested in dressing as a pirate wench.

In an essay in The Huffington Post, Joel Schwarzberg writes about how some Halloween costumes are inappropriate for kids. In particular, he’s disturbed by gory costumes inspired by horror movies such as “Friday the 13th,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Halloween.” But there are others that are even worse. Last week, my daughter got all gussied up in her fairy costume and we shuttled her off to the firehouse Halloween party that our ladies auxiliary (and in particular one incredibly mom organizer) throws every year. This week – she informed my father-in-law she wants to be a ghost for Halloween.

Yes, the request came just a few days before the big day – after I’d already gotten together the costume she’d requested (Tinkerbell), and found appropriate attire to go underneath said costume to make it upstate New York weather-proof. Continue reading »
