Clipping coupons may feel like a retro act, but it’s clearly back in fashion thanks to the recession, social media savings sites like Groupon and television shows like Extreme Couponing, which make scrimping seem less gauche. And speaking of television shows… America’s O.G. TV mom, Kate Gosselin, has finally found a new gig following the cancellation of her TLC show Kate Plus 8. The mother of multiple multiples is joining coupon site CouponCabin.com as “a regularly contributing blogger to offer money-saving advice.”

Exploitation or opportunity of a lifetime?

The other day I wrote a post about Kate Gosselin in which I found myself defending her. To be honest I had intended to talk some trash about Kate, but the more I read about why she was getting slammed in the media the more I couldn’t understand what the big deal is about Kate. She’s brash, somewhat abrasive and says what she thinks, which can lead to dislike. Especially when those features are showcased on television as you’re going through a very contentious divorce.

I suppose Kate is just someone people like to hate. So yeah, she has a few personality issues (who doesn’t?) but it seems that everyone’s biggest beef with Kate is that she “exploits her children”. Read any article about her on the web and of the hundreds of comments that follow, I guarantee half of them will talk about how she exploits her kids.

Here are my thoughts. If I’ve learned one thing as a parent it’s to avoid discussing how to raise children with anyone. You know how Miss Manners says it’s impolite to discuss politics and religion at the dinner table? Add parenting to that list. People go nuts on this topic. Inflicting their opinions on people as if they’re some sort of parenting expert. In fact, I’d rather talk religion than parenting.

So, when we see parents raising children on reality television, the claws naturally come out. And so much of our ridicule is deserving. Take the abomination that is Toddlers & Tiaras. That poor excuse for a television show should be illegal. Are those girls exploited? Absolutely. Now take the Gosselin children, who are featured in their home environment or on vacations specifically tailored to children. How can that be a bad thing? Continue reading »

Cut a single, working mom some slack, wouldja?

I know it’s all the rage to hate Kate Gosselin. I’m not a huge fan but I dig that she tells it like it is, for the most part, albeit in a somewhat abrasive way.

I watched the show in the early days but once the divorce was front page on all the tabloids I tuned out.

I will say this, though. Eight kids is more than a handful.  I have two and most days I’m counting the seconds until bedtime and cocktail hour.  So I get it.  I get that Kate Gosselin probably spent every waking moment before TLC stepped into her life freaking out.  How am I going to pay for everything?  How am I going to make ends meet?  Will my the lives of my children be sub par because there are just so damn many of them?  How can I provide my children with the same experiences as other children who aren’t multiples?

I get it.

So when someone offered her a ton of money to allow her family’s life to be made into a reality show she probably felt as if she won the jackpot.  Quite honestly, who wouldn’t feel that way.  The family earned more money than they knew what to do with and mom and dad didn’t have to worry about getting jobs outside the home and try to afford childcare for eight children, not to mention the horror of one parent trying to take care of eight children while the other one worked.

So yes, thank goodness for TLC.  But it all went to Kate’s head. Or did it? Continue reading »

TLC has announced that Kate Plus 8 is in its final season.

People revealed Monday that Kate Gosselin‘s reality show Kate Plus 8, formerly Jon and Kate Plus 8, is currently in its final season.  At the end of this season, Kate Plus 8 will have filmed 150 episodes, what TLC calls “an exceptional milestone.”  TV’s original reality mom has lost a job, and so have her children.

According to Kate’s twitter feed, the Gosselin children spent Monday morning crying about the show’s cancellation. Kate has long maintained that her children love being filmed, but mental health experts and child advocates have expressed concern for the Gosselin children in the past. Continue reading »

Kate Gosselin expresses herself.

According to reports, two of Jon and Kate Gosselin’s kids have been expelled from school.

If you ever watched even one episode of the the now-defunct “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ reality series on TLC, then you probably already know that Kate Gosselin is one tightly wound woman.

Controlling and angry, Kate regularly lashed out at her husband and belittled him in front of the children and millions of television viewers.

In fact, I quit watching the show because, while I could certainly sympathize with difficulty of being Kate Gosselin, I just couldn’t stomach her nastiness.

But because kids learn what they live, I am not all that surprised to learn that at least two of the Gosselin kids have anger issues of their own.  Continue reading »
