Is Bad Music Better For Kids?
Ok, so maybe I’m kind of a music snob. I regularly veto songs that the Genius selects (from my husband’s side of the MP3 family, of course). Sometimes I run over to the computer to stop the flow as if it were blood from an artery. Does that count?
When my son was two, we started letting him watch TV. But only live concert videos. We spent hours watching Monterey Pop and the Rock and Roll Circus. He was particularly obsessed with Rust Never Sleeps. He eventually outgrew this compliant phase and instead wanted to watch endless episodes of “How It’s Made”. By the time my daughter was born, my stringent filter had become somewhat more lax. I still played “good” music around the house, but I stopped trying to make it “educational”. My daughter was clearly more excited by the pop music she heard on shopping excursions with her babysitter than X-Ray Spex, anyway.
On a family outing, I returned from a bathroom break to find my whole family listening to Katy Perry on eleven. My husband explained that this is what they do when I’m not around, “Because Mommy doesn’t like it.” That’s when I questioned whether my cultural fascism might not be the best thing for my children.
Sesame Street Premiere September 26: Justin Bieber Puppet! (Video)
Check out the new Sesame Street season’s video clips, including a puppet that looks a lot like Justin Bieber!
It probably wasn’t that long ago that Justin Bieber was watching Sesame Street, but how cute is this purple puppet (Bieb’s favorite color – don’t ask me why I know that), with the signature flop of hair? Continue reading »
The Next Generation of Young — and Bad — Celebrity Role Models
We can argue until we’re blue in the face that parents alone should be their kids’ role models. But the reality is that unless your kids live in a bubble, they will likely and inevitably look up to public figures like athletes, politicians, musicians and actors for what they accomplish on the field, in office and on stage and screen — as well as what they do in their free time.
Some in the spotlight do their best to ensure their overall professional message is in line with the wholesome image they project on a daily basis, like, say, Taylor Swift and Daniel Radcliffe. Then there are those don’t seem to care much what others, or kids in particular, must think of them. Perhaps what’s hardest to explain to little ones is when the stars they admire are setting bad examples.
I don’t fault famous people for doing what they do for a living and then ensuring their private lives remain out of the glare of the paparazzi — in fact, I applaud them for that. But the ones who go after our kids’ wallets and then set poor examples by living their lives publicly and poorly is disgraceful.
Take a look at some of at some of the new worst young role models for kids (and no, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Heidi Montag, Tiger Woods, Snooki, Ke$ha, Taylor Momsen and the cast of Teen Mom aren’t on the list — they’re old news):
11-Year-Old Mayor For a Day Renames Main Street Justin Beiber Way
Ask any 11-year-old girl what she would do if she was mayor for a day? 8 out of 10 of them would probably wield their power in such a way to include Justin Bieber is some form or another. That’s just what tween Caroline Gonzalez did when she was named the mayor of Forney, Texas for 24 hours.
Caroline won the honor of being mayor for a day from a contest to get kids interested in politics and municipal government. And her big bold act? Renaming Main Street “Justin Bieber Way.” But will the name stick? Continue reading »
Show Your Hearts Campaign: Justin Bieber, Other Celebs Help Raise Money for Berry Family
The Show Your Hearts campaign has gotten some big celebrity names behind it to raise money for a trio of Texas orphans whose parents were killed in a car accident.
The kids survived the car accident, but the two boys are partially paralyzed and the children sadly lost their parents.
The whole thing is just beyond devastating, but Justin Bieber and some other A-listers have gotten behind a campaign to help raise money for the family. Continue reading »
This Video for Justin Bieber’s Perfume Will Have Your Tweens OMGing, You LOLing

OMG JUSTIN BIEBER! I WANT TO SMELL LIKE HIS DREAMS!
If you’ve got girls aged 8 to 13 years old, chances are at least one of them has had Bieber Fever for the last year or so. In the summer of 2009, my niece wore a homemade “Justin Bieber Fan” tank to a free outdoor concert featuring the Canadian YouTuber, and back then, no one had heard of the kid. Less than two years later he’s at the top of the Billboard charts with hits like “Never Say Never” and his film of the same name grossed $73,013,910 at the box office. Justin Bieber makes girls swoon in a way that the Jonas Brothers never did. Maybe it’s because the JoBros wore Purity Rings while Justin Bieber’s pageboy just screams “do me.” I dunno.
What I do know, dear sweet baby Biebus, is that I just(in) can’t get enough of the way your delightfully adorable teenage face betrays you every time you have to place your mouth near a female’s mouth, pretend kissing her/making duck-billed lip-love to the airspace betwixt you. You first displayed that “I’m about to kiss/barf on you” look in your “Baby” video, around the 1:31 mark. And now that signature swagger is all over this great ad for your new perfume, Someday. Mothers, grab your daughters and watch: Continue reading »
Kids’ First Kiss Goes Viral: Too Cute Or Too Much? [VIDEO]
Do you remember your first kiss? I do. I was eleven. I planted one on the lips of my “boyfriend”. On a dare. It was harmless.
5-year-old Elliot and his friend, 6-year-old Bowie, will remember their first kiss forever because it’s already logged more than five million views on YouTube since it was uploaded five days ago.
The video was uploaded by Elliot’s mother with this description:
Do you remember how you felt when you had your first kiss? This was captured by accident, in its most innocent form. If only it could be this way every time… Meet Elliott and Bowie.
***(they are NOT related. She is literally the “girl next door”. Love is her middle name. His shirt is a coincidence)***
Teen sensation Justin Bieber saw the video and tweeted it to his more than nine million followers saying “This kid has game.”
Others agree, leaving comments on the YouTube video like “cutest thing ever” or “too adorable” … But if you scroll through the nearly 42,000 comments others disapprove saying things like “Too much, too soon, too young” or “this is just WRONG! kids should play games and go to school, if they start with kisses in this age soon they will have to make difficult decisions like what to do when she become pregnant at age 12! that’s what her mom wants?”
I agree with the folks who say it’s adorable. What about you? What do you think? Too cute or too much too soon?
Check out the video after the jump: Continue reading »
