Before anyone runs out to buy you a gift for Mother’s Day this Sunday (emphasis on the run since it’s already Friday), make sure they take into consideration what you’re worth, particularly if you are a stay-at-home mom.
It’s widely believed that being a stay-at-home home mom doesn’t pay as well as an office job. Let’s see how it breaks down in reality.
Reporters and financial analysts have dubbed the economic downturn “the mancession” because it put a disproportionate number of men out of work.
But a new report, “Working Mothers in the Great Recession,” shows that it could just as easily be called “the momcession” because of the way it has slammed working women — especially mothers, and particularly single moms.
While the majority of recession job losses were overwhelmingly male, as the economy crept toward recovery, men gained employment, while women lost jobs, according to the report by the Joint Economic Committee based on analysis of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
How much are you worth as a mom?
Of course, there’s no way to quantify all of the hugs, play date scheduling, and discipline you provide for your family. But Salary.com has come up with a number.
Based on ten daily functions described by a survey of some 28,000 stay-at-home moms (they didn’t include dads), Salary.com determined that the average stay-at-home mom should be earning $117,856 a year. There’s a lot of talk about how U.S. schools neglect science and math in the curriculum. So it should be no surprise that National Engineers Week went mostly unnoticed as well.
Of course, the week launched on Valentine’s Day and nothing says “Be Mine” like an algorithm and robotics talk. But still. Their goals are noble if not romantic. The group behind the week, Lockheed Martin, just wants to get more science, technology, engineering and math into the schools.

Like nearly every one of us did way back when, 17-year-old Zikerria Bellamy applied for a job at McDonald’s. Lots of teens appreciate the free food, the experience, and, most of all, the money that comes with the job. Unfortunately, Zikerria wasn’t hired. That wouldn’t be of much interest were it not for the reason she was turned down — Zikerria is transgendered. And if that weren’t bad enough, one of the managers of the restaurant actually called her and left a voice message saying “We don’t hire faggots.”
According to a survey taken by the Pew Research Center, almost two-thirds of working mothers would rather work part-time than full-time. Fathers, on the other hand, overwhelmingly — almost four out of five — prefer to work full time. Even putting the Monday morning “I-don’-wanna-go-work” feeling aside, these statistics surprise me in that I would expect far more parents would want to cut back on their work schedule in favor of spending time with their kids.
It seems that the Pentagon has had a better year than most of us — and its best year since 1973. Its best year for new recruits, that is. All four branches of the military — the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps — met their recruitment goals for both active duty and reserve personnel for the fiscal year that ended September 30.
