Iran finds the 2012 logo to be racist.

The 2012 Olympics will be a great chance for parents to introduce their children to countless cultures around the world — an opportunity to show them that different isn’t wrong. In fact, different is right. For it’s all of our differences that make the Olympics so special. And when the nations of the world convene for two weeks to engage in countless contests, they do so as both competitors as well as members of the same world-wide community.

Sadly, it appears as if one of the members of the world-wide community has a problem with the logo that represents the event that is supposed to bring everyone together.

In Iran, the punishment for adultery is death by stoning.  When the stoning involves a woman, she is buried in the ground up to her neck and hit with stones big enough to cause pain, but not large enough to kill her, so to make the punishment as slow and painful as possible.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 42-year-old mother of two, was convicted of adultery in 2006. Her confession came after 99 lashes with a whip and she later withdrew it. Her trial was held in a language she couldn’t understand. There were no witnesses to her crime, which the court charged her with through “judicial knowledge.” Basically, the judge felt like she was guilty so she was.

Good morning! First up, President Obama, Henry Louis Gates, Officer James Crowley, and Vice President Biden met yesterday in the Rose Garden of the White House for that much vaunted beer. From statements from both Gates and Crowley, it sounds like everybody involved was cordial, honest and quite frankly handled things with a lot more grace and maturity than the media did, even with shoots-his-mouth-off Biden involved. Non-American beers? Really? We’re going to fuss about that?

I wonder if Steve Jobs is happy with this Wall Street Journal headline: JOBS HAD LIVER TRANSPLANT. It’s not that it isn’t true, at least according to news reports. But it seems like an odd thing to read in the paper. “Hey honey, look! They printed the press release about my gall bladder! Awesome!” Obviously Steve Jobs is a huge part of Apple’s success; news of his possible health problems actually had a negative effect on the company’s stock price. For me the weirdest thing is the way that Apple FANS react. I’m sure some are sympathetic but some seem to be concerned that Stevey J might not be able to come up with more Apple products for them to spend money on. I doubt there is any other company in history that has spawned so many rabid fans of PRODUCT. Anyway, the Apple diehards won’t have Steve Jobs to kick around anymore, at least not full-time. So Barack Obama has really high approval ratings, at 63 percent. Republicans, of course, like him less and less, with only 22 percent giving him high marks, down from 44 in February. But what’s interesting is that there’s a big gap, ten or 20 points sometimes, between that approval rating and people’s assessment of how he’s handled some of the bigger initiatives of his term, such as saving GM (thanks, BTW) and closing Guantanamo Bay.

Maybe people will like this: Obama yesterday announced major changes to the regulation of the financial industry, including creating a new agency for consumer protection and requiring the Federal Reserve to watch over companies deemed “too big to fail.” People who know what they are talking about (I am not one) say this essentially prepares the feds to “fight the last war,” but maybe trying to fix what’s already been broken is not the worst idea.

Luckily most people approve of Obama’s foreign policy, because things are getting a little terrifying over in Iran. Today is supposed to be a day of mourning for those killed in the protests and the government continues to crack down.

And on a more light note – Eddie Bauer filed for bankruptcy yesterday! I hope they come out of it, because where are we to get our Momish cargo capris and soft comfy fleeces if they disappear? Their stuff wears like iron, too, and is pretty, um, trend-resistant? So you can buy them once and wear them for a long time. Best wishes, Mr. Bauer!
