If there’s a silver-lining to Torry Hansen’s deplorable abandonment of her adopted son Justin when his grandmother put him on an airplane and sent him back to Russia, then maybe it will be this: More awareness about what it takes to be a parent of a child adopted internationally.
In today’s New York Times, adoptive families are reminding potential adoptive parents and the rest of us: In some adoptions, love doesn’t conquer all.
Most adoptions from China now are of special-needs children, versus the girl infant that most of us probably think of.
There’s lots of reasons for this. The government has loosened the one-child policy that led to girls being abandoned and eventually adopted out to foreigners. Also, there’s been a growing demand for domestic adoption within China, making fewer healthy infants available for international adoption. And the wait for adopting internationally from China used to be about year — now, it’s stretched to four.

Eight of the 10 Americans jailed in Haiti for trying to take children across the border illegally have been freed. But their case has raised awareness about the serious issue of child trafficking in Haiti, and it’s having an affect on other people trying to move children out of the country legally.
Sarah Thacker, an adoptive mother from Minnesota, was in Haiti bringing home her adopted son, as well as five other children traveling to their adoptive families. Unlike Laura Silsby, Thacker had both correct and legal documents. Continue reading »
A group of orphans in Haiti were waiting to be adopted by American families when the quake hit. The children, and the two American women who care for them, survived the quake.
They’re now sharing in the fate of the country: no water, no food, no security from violence should riots break out in their area.
Several mommy bloggers have taken up their cause, using their platform to get attention for these kids and the families hoping to welcome them home.
There are still plenty of would-be parents out there, but the number of Americans adopting kids from overseas is the lowest it has been in thirteen years.

The BBC is reporting that dozens of Chinese babies have been forcefully taken from their parents by the government and sent into the international adoption system. The report–which I couldn’t find any trace of elsewhere–suggests that families breaking the family planning policy and unable or unwilling to pay the fine for doing so have had their children removed instead.
