Co-sleeping in the U.S. more dangerous?
Co-sleeping with an older child is one thing. But sharing a bed with an infant who can’t wiggle out from under dad’s arm or pull herself free of bedsheets and pillows is quite another. And according to South Australian coroner Mark Johns, parents who do it are risking their children’s lives.

A recent study by Iftikhar Mirza, sleep scientist at Silentnight bed company, says that parents of infants miss out on 912 hours of much-needed sleep, based on a minimum of 5 hours a night, before their child turns 2.

Fox news isn’t the most reputable source of information, but a recent report on co-sleeping highlights some interesting data. In Milwaukee county, 100 percent of co-sleeping deaths have involved formula fed babies.
In 2001, a government study found that if only half of all mothers breastfed their babies for the first six months of their lives, $3.6 billion could be saved each year. The savings weren’t calculated based on how much infant formula would not be needed, but on health care costs related to illnesses breast milk may help prevent.
Today, an updated study takes those calculations a step further and reveals not only how much money could be saved by breastfeeding, but how many lives as well. Continue reading »
Less goo-goo-gah-gah and more plain English may pave the way for your baby to communicate sooner.
Standing in line for the H1N1 shot last fall were parents, grandparents, and other caretakers of newborn infants.
Because there is no flu shot — H1N1 or seasonal — approved for infants under six months, and because infants are at high risk for complications if they do catch the flu, the next best thing is making sure that everyone around the infant is vaccinated.
But a new study out of the University of Washington, Seattle suggests that seasonal flu vaccines may be safely used in infants as young as six weeks old.
