I'm guessing this woman will have a boy.
It seems counterintuitive. After all, stress usually does nothing more than add a layer of complication to anything one tries to accomplish. Consider the following. Your 6 year-old little girl is nervous about performing well in the big piano recital. What advice might you give her?
Probably something along the lines of this: “Honey, you’re going to do great. Try not to get all worked up about it. Just go out there and have fun.”
But if that same little girl is similar to a woman trying to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization, perhaps you should tell her this: “Sweetheart. I’ve been thinking about the whole recital deal. And honestly? I think it’d be best for you to obsess upon it from this very moment until it’s finally over. Frankly, you’re bound to fail.”

New procedure may triple the success rate for IVF.
A new procedure in human trials now may triple the success rate for IVF. One study showed that 88 percent of the women undergoing it gave birth to healthy babies.
The procedure, called Chromosome Aneuploidy Screening, screens embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before implanting them in a woman’s body. This process eliminates most of the risk of miscarriage, as well as future health risks like Down’s Syndrome.
It’s like pre-prenatal screening. Which in itself should come as a huge relief to moms going through fertility treatments and trying to weigh the risks of existing prenatal tests.

Hearings are underway this week for Beverly Hills fertility doctor Michael Kamrava, who may have his medical license suspended or revoked after what the state’s medical board says was a gross departure from standard of care for in vitro fertilization.
Kamrava should have implanted no more than two embroyos when his patient, Nadya Suleman came to him for in vitro said Dr. Fujimoto, director of US San Fran’s In Vitro Fertilization program when he testified yesterday, according to the Los Angeles Times.
She already had six kids and was 33 years old. National standards indicated one or two embryos would have been appropriate. Kamrara had said he implanted six embryos and that two had divided to produce eight. Now it’s come out that he in fact implanted 12.
Let’s see, carry the one, divide by two…this was some seriously wacky egg math.

IVF Raises Legal Questions
A judge has ruled that a couple whose children were born with darker skin after an IVF mix-up were not entitled to damages.
The Irish couple sued a Health and Social Services Trust for negligence in the insemination process which they said has caused “racial taunting and emotional distress” for their children, according to The Belfast Telegraph.
Although the parents had requested a white sperm donor, the mother’s eggs were inseminated with sperm labelled Caucasian (Cape coloured), referring to a mixed-race South African community. Continue reading »

“Infant R,” as he’s referred to in court documents, is at the center of a legal battle in which an Indiana Court will decide who can legally be listed as the baby’s mother.
On the one hand, it makes sense to have kids while you’re still relatively young — in your 20s or 30s — so that you have the energy to keep up with them and take care of their needs better. On the other hand, it’s good to wait so that you’re financially and emotionally stable and so that you can enjoy life without kids for a bit first; it’s difficult to go to grown-up concerts and parties when you have little ones to take care of. Or you could just wait until you retire before having kids.
