Google's tasty doodle.
If you happen upon Google today, you’ll no doubt notice the tasty looking doodle staring back you. It’s in the form of an ice cream sundae, the two “o”s having been replaced by scoops of ice cream, one with a cherry on top for good measure.
Aside from testing your willpower, Google is paying homage to the sundae. It turns out that today is the 119th anniversary of the chilly treat which originated in Ithaca, N.Y, although that fact is up for debate. Especially if you live in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
Baby Gaga Breast Milk Ice Cream
The latest update in the Baby Gaga breast milk ice cream saga is that the members of the Westminster Council – who pulled the product over health concerns – have sided with Icecreamists owner Matt O’Connor, agreeing that the product is safe for human consumption.
Victoria Hiley – the donor whose milk was used in the initial batch of Baby Gaga – calls the ice cream “beautiful and repellent,” owing to the fact that breast milk is “only for babies and yet so is the milk of cows.” That’s precisely the problem Lady Gaga seems to have with the sweet treat. Hiley says, “We’ve become estranged from our own mammalhood and recoil from breast milk while we drink cows’ milk without a thought.” Continue reading »
Why did people buy Baby Gaga breastmilk ice cream?
You’d think we’re having some kind of food shortage among industrialized nations, what with all the delicious breast milk offerings that seem to abound.
Some time ago, fancy New York chef Daniel Angerer made cheese out of his wife’s leftover breast milk. More recently, a London ice-cream shop hawked “Baby Gaga,” a delicious frozen dairy treat made from, among other ingredients, breast milk.
Do non-nurslings really need human milk to round out their daily nutritional needs. Are there adults who actually enjoy the cool sweetness of frozen num-nums on a cone?
Why, when, as a nation, we’re actually sort of skeeved out about breastfeeding, do we seem to be fascinated with consuming the stuff (and by “we” I mean “not me”)? Continue reading »
Hi! I'm made of breast milk! Mmmm...
A London ice cream parlor called The Icecreamists is selling a frozen treat they call the “Baby Gaga.” It’s ice cream made from breast milk. When I heard about this new flavor, I threw up in my mouth a little bit.
It’s reported that Baby Gaga costs $23, but I don’t know if that’s for a pint, a cone or a gallon. The flavor is made by blending breast milk “with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest.” Initially, only one mom was donating breast milk to The Icecreamists, but the shop just signed on 15 new suppliers. Around our house, we never need an excuse to eat ice cream, but we’re trying hard to keep treats to special occasions. Baskin-Robbins 31 Cent Scoop Night is the perfect occasion to enjoy a family trip to the ice cream shop and to support our local heroes at the same time.
Baskin Robbins 31 Cent Scoop Night is held in honor of America’s firefighters, and The Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation will donate $100,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28th (that’s tomorrow!), participating Baskin-Robbin stores will dish up ice cream for 31 cents a scoop. At some locations, local firefighters will be on hand, and customers will get a chance to donate directly to local charities.
Good cause, good ice cream, all for under a dollar a cone. Sign me up! Visit the Baskin-Robbins website for a participating store near you.

A little before 2 a.m. on Friday, I pulled into a truck stop outside Syracuse. My kids, asleep in the backseat, started to fidget as soon as the engine turned off. By the time my husband was pumping the gas, I had scooped one girl into my arms and was slipping shoes on the other one. They both started to cry.
“Who wants an ice cream cone?” I said.
Yeah, I know. Food does not equal love. But. Sometimes, as food sociologist Dina Rose says, “It’s like hooking up an I.V. of happiness.”
There’s just one Cold Stone Creamery in my town, and I’m so thankful that it’s on the other side of town. Because that chocolate peanut butter mish-mash thing they do? Dangerously hard to resist.
But tomorrow is a day to indulge guilt-free. Stop in at any Cold Stone Creamery to make a donation to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and you’ll get a free “like-it” sized sample of Jack’s Creation: Sweet cream ice cream mixed with brownies and rainbow sprinkles and topped with caramel. Yum.
Proceeds will go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, an organization that works to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Do something good, eat something sweet. That’s a win/win in my book.
