Miranda Cosgrove's new album, High Maintenance
Sunday’s New York Times Magazine was dubbed “the youth issue” (note lowercase). The cover story: Peggy Orenstein’s fascinating profile of Miranda Cosgrove, star of Nickelodeon’s iCarly, and TV’s good girl of the moment. Cosgrove is carrying the torch once held by Miley Cyrus, which begs the question: Will Miranda Cosgrove mirror the Hannah Montana star’s very public fall from grace?
Like Miley before her, Miranda Cosgrove is packaged as spunky and sassy without being sexual. Miley shed that image in a few fell swoops and scantily clad photo shoots. So far, the iCarly star is supposedly content with her “golden girl” image. But is it only a matter of time before the weight of being a respectable role model to younger girls begins to clash with the teen’s need to carve out her own grown-up identity?
According to Orenstein, author of the popular new book Cinderella Ate My Daughter, the squeaky clean image of these tween and teen girl stars may actually be part of the reason for their rebellion.
Spaghetti tacos go gourmet.
It seems that spaghetti tacos are all the rage these days. While parents of tv-watching tweens have long known about the spaghetti taco dish featured on the hit show iCarly, the New York Times has just discovered it. Earlier this week, they ran a piece in which kids and parents alike sang the praises of this funky food combination.
Now we all want to know how to make spaghetti tacos. You could go by the recipe from the iCarly show, but that’s really less a recipe than an instruction (put spaghetti in taco and eat). Why not get a little gourmet with your spaghetti tacos? Continue reading »
Would your kid eat this?
How does spaghetti tacos sound for dinner tonight? Kind of weird and perhaps a little gross? Maybe, but according to an article in the New York Times Dining and Wine section, spaghetti tacos are all the rage among tv-watching tweens.
If you are the parent of a tween – especially a tween girl – then you probably don’t need an explanation for how two such dissimilar foods came together on the same plate. But for the rest of you, let me explain. Continue reading »
It started out innocently enough. A few years ago, I watched a couple of hours of Disney Channel programming to make sure that what my kid was watching was appropriate. You know, “Suite Life,” “Hannah Montana” and all those other silly shows they love so much. I didn’t particularly enjoy them, but as a parent it is my responsibility to know what she’s watching, right?
But then, Nickelodeon got in on the act. I sat down to watch “iCarly” and something happened. I stopped rolling my eyes and started actually enjoying the show. It was well-written and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. That’s when I realized that tween TV had changed. Continue reading »
