Kathleen Prieskorn was three months pregnant and working as a waitress when she realized she was having her second miscarriage. She rushed to her doctor’s office where, as she tells writer Molly M. Ginty at Ms. Magazine, she learned her amniotic sac had torn.
Prieskorn lives in Manchester, New Hampshire with her husband. The nearest hospital had recently merged with a Catholic hospital so her doctor could not help her complete her miscarriage.
“… because my doctor could still detect a fetal heartbeat, he wasn’t allowed to give me a uterine evacuation that would help me complete my miscarriage.”
To get someone to perform the procedure, the poor woman had to drive eighty miles to a hospital that would perform the procedure. Prieskorn has no car and no health insurance, so an expensive ambulance trip was out of the question. Instead, as Ginty reports, Prieskorn’s doctor gave her $400 of his own cash and put her in a cab. A hospital in L.A. has been taken to task for offering salon services including “nail and eyebrow” treatments in it’s neonatal intensive care ward. The allegations of “waxing services of any kind” were just false, the county investigators found.
Staffers were giving each other the beauty treatments in their break rooms, and only once in awhile did the salon activities spill over into the ward itself, the report finds.
2.2 million babies owe their lives to one man and his very unique blood. Actually, because James Harrison has been donating his special blood for over 56 years, many of those babies have grown up to have children and even become grandparents. So the real number of lives Harrison is responsible for is exponentially higher.
17-month-old Bronson Staker’s mom, Sara, only turned her back on her son in the tub for a minute. An older brother distracted her. Anyone with more than one kid knows this situation all too well. Yet, in just that moment, Sara turned back to find her child lying face down in the tub. At the hospital, Bronson was pronounced dead on arrival. 10 months ago, 2-year-old Layla Grace was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer. The prognosis was dim; Layla would probably lose this battle with her disease. As Layla’s parents struggled to appreciate the remaining days they had left with their daughter, they decided to share their grief in a decidedly 21st century way.

A recent survey found that, in 2009, 32 percent of hospitals installed or plan to install an “infant abduction prevention solution,” including hidden cameras, alarm systems, and automatically locking doors.

Dear children: There is a reason why I annoy you with all those warnings not to run with scissors/pencils/sharp sticks. And this is it.
A 14-month-old Chinese boy is being described as “lucky” after a chopstick was removed from his skull. The toddler was playing with the chopsticks when he fell, and the stick went up his nose and actually made its way 4 cm into his brain.
