Remember Constance McMillen? She’s the student that was banned from escorting her girlfriend to the senior prom in Mississippi. The local branch of the A.C.L.U jumped to her defense and petitioned the school on her behalf. School officials responded that same-sex dates (not to mention tuxedo-wearing females) were against school policy. The civil rights organization shot back that said policy was unconstitutional. End result: the prom was canceled for everyone. Luckily for Constance (and all non-heterosexual kids), the A.C.L.U. wants to continue to fight the fight.
It sounds like something to draw immediate outrage: a student was expelled from his Colorado school for having gay parents. So why is the school within its bounds to make this drastic decision?
Because it’s a Catholic school, a private institution where they’ve decided parents sending their kids to the school must live within the faith. And in case you hadn’t noticed, the Catholic church considers homosexuality a sin. Continue reading »
The fight over same sex marriage in California has brought up a conundrum for the anti crowd: if they’re going to use inability to procreate as a reason gay marriage can’t be legalized, shouldn’t it apply to straights?
The AFP reports Charles Cooper, an attorney for Proposition 8′s campaign committee, Protect Marriage, has said during the trial “the purpose of the institution of marriage, the central purpose, is to promote procreation and to channel naturally procreative sexual activity between men and women in stable enduring unions.” Continue reading »
Votes cast in the senior superlative contest at a South Bronx high school were cast in favor of acceptance this month. The title for best couple at the Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School has gone to a set of lesbian teen.

Earlier this year, Alameda Unified School District, just across the bay from San Francisco and, undoubtedly, home to many school children with gay and lesbian parents, approved a curriculum that teaches tolerance of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered members of the community. Two board members, however, voted against the program, one because the curriculum is not comprehensive enough — she felt it should have included race and religion — and the other because there was no opt-out provision. The latter issue prompted the Pacific Justice Institute to file a lawsuit on behalf of parents who, I guess, want their children to think it’s okay to bully kids based on sexual identity and gender preference.
Quick — name the last three Assistant Deputy Secretaries of Education for Safe and Drug-Free Schools.
Can’t? Didn’t think so. But the current person in the post, Obama appointee Kevin Jennings, has become a lighting rod for criticism from the right because of his previous job. See, Jennings founded the Gay-Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, which devotes itself to making sure “each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.”
It’s kind of sad that somehow, founding an organization that tries to keep gay kids from being bullied and gives them support at school is controversial in this day and age, but apparently it is.
