Shouldn't there be exceptions when kids are sick?
We’re currently on Day 3 of a horrid cold, sinus infection, ear infection, bronchitis combo that has invaded our home and infected the household. Well, everyone except me because seriously, when would I have time to be sick? So, not only am I doubling as a nurse in addition to housemaid, but I’ve also become a tutor/teacher. Although the kids have been too sick to go to school, they are still expected to have their homework completed when they go back.
I understand the need to have every student on the same page as the rest of the class but can’t an allowance be made for when your child is sick? I mean if he’s sick enough to stay home, he is probably too sick to do homework. Allowing a couple of extra days to complete the work does not seem like too much to ask.
This child shouldn't have to suffer so. Quick, Mom, take over!

Homework is like the kid version of taxes: no one loves it, but it’s an unpleasant certainty of life. Like brushing your teeth, it’s one of those things you just have to do.
That might be less true for our kids than it was for us. School districts all over the country are taking a surprising stance on homework. They’re banning it. Or at least putting some stern restrictions in place.
The New York Times chronicles several school districts struggle to address parental concerns about the amount of homework their kids face. As one administrator put it, “Parents want their kids back.”
Working hard?
A mom finds out her seventh grader’s school passed out report cards last week. She didn’t get her daughter’s report card because her daughter hid it in a drawer.
Why did her daughter hide it? Because while she typically gets good grades, this time got a poor grade (76) in science class. Caveat: The family has a rule. If a child doesn’t receive an 85 in a particular area, she’s grounded until the next progress report by which time the grade should be up.
Should the mom punish the daughter for the grade? For hiding the report card? For both?
Back to school jitters are common, but what is your child really thinking about as she prepares for the big day? Maybe not what you think. While there may be some nervous feelings about new teachers and hitting the books, most kids feel pretty positive about going back to school. Continue reading »
With school just about to start, the anxiety is beginning to rise around here. Not my child’s, but mine. She’s all set with school supplies and new clothes and happily looking forward to the fourth grade. But I am already beginning to dread the commencement of the homework war.
Like a lot of kids, mine resents having to do school work at home. Not only does she regret the loss of what she feels should be leisure time, she claims to not even see the point of doing homework in the first place. Doesn’t she do enough work in school? In 1993, researchers at the University of California discovered what they dubbed the “Mozart Effect.” Studying a group of student’s academic performance after listening to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, they claimed to have documented a temporary enhancement of spatial-temporal reasoning as measured by a standard IQ test. In other words, the kids got smarter by listening to classical music.
Despite the fact that those results could not be duplicated by other researchers, parents bought into it big time. As a result, a new industry was born in which classical music CD’s were marketed specifically for babies. Continue reading »
