My feelings about gift wrapping are similar to my feelings about bed making: I’d rather not do it.
The gifts I wrap look only slightly better than this one.
Why make your bed when you are only going to mess it up a few hours later? For me, it’s a waste of energy, unless of course you have guests coming over and want them to believe you are neat. As for wrapping gifts, it seems like such a waste of paper, not to mention the expedition required to hunt through my house for items like scissors and tape, long spirited off by my children to who knows where.
His words live on.
As our nation takes this day to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. and all that he stood for, many of us are reflecting on his “I Have a Dream Speech,” and other MLK quotes. Though Martin Luther King’s life was cut short, his words live on, and become more and more powerful as generation after generation of people hear them, read them, Google them, e-mail them, text them, share them, and live them.
As a writer, I find myself drawn to Martin Luther King’s quotes and speeches not just for their content, but for the cadence and the rhythm and the eloquence of his carefully chosen words. They are nothing short of poetry. This is a man who understood that words have weight. And that the words we project into the world can result in action. As I read his words, I’m reminded of another well-known quote:
“Be careful of your thoughts, for your thoughts become your words.
Be careful of your words, for your words become your actions.
Be careful of your actions, for your actions become your habits.
Be careful of your habits, for your habits become your character.
Be careful of your character, for your character becomes your destiny.” — Author unknown
We all need to be careful of the words that we project into the world, whether in our everyday conversation, in a blog post, in an anonymous comment on a message board, or in the words that we choose when we speak to our children. Continue reading »

Do you know a deserving family in your day-to-day life that you want to help out? With the economy the way it has been in recent years, I think we all know that family. Two years ago this was my family.
November rolled around and as the banks were starting to tank alongside the auto industry and virtually everything else my husband brought home a pink slip. Laid off after working hard with a company for 18 months straight. Peeps. Good ‘ol wholesome, tasteless peeps. Easter would just be “Jesus day” without ‘em.

6-year-old Justin Martin of Bridgewater, NJ may only weigh about 50 pounds, but his heart is the size of Santa’s. The pint-sized teddy bear fan asked his dad if everyone owned one of the cuddly stuffed animals that he so adores. Dad replied in the negative and an idea was born: not only did Justin give away his older bears, but he decided that he would make 1,000 at Build-A-Bear and give them away to kids who don’t have one to call their own.
There’s a rumor going around first grade that’s spreading fast: Santa isn’t real. That’s thanks to one six-year-old boy whose big sister let him in on the secret. It’s got parents scrambling for an answer this week, and though my own kid hasn’t put me on the spot just yet, I’m expecting it any day.
Hearing that news from other kids is one thing. Hearing from an adult that is not your parent is another.
