Sixteen-year-old Brittany Indvik says she was just trying to promote breast cancer awareness when she and her friends wore brightly colored rubber bracelets declaring “I (Heart) Boobies, Keep-a-Breast” to school at Klahowya Secondary School.
But school administrators say the bracelets are disrupting the learning environment and have asked students to either turn the bracelets inside out or leave them at home. The teens are putting up a fight.
Fred Phelps is planning to bring his hate show on the road to Mississippi to picket Constance McMillen’s high school graduation.
The students of Itawamba Regional High School and their parents sent Constance and her girlfriend to a fake prom last month while they partied at a secret prom thrown by parents.
After that stunt, someone might have thought those parents were the most immature bigots in the country. Phelps doesn’t want to let his rep slide, so he’s heading down to show them how pathetic adults can really be when they’re wrapped up in hate and attacking the vulnerable.
The suicide of Phoebe Prince after she was extensively bullied by her peers at a Massachusetts high school has reverberated through the country.
Schools are examining their recess rules to control bullying. MySpace and Facebook are being freshly scrutinized with an eye to the dangers posed by peers. And yesterday, nine of the students involved in bullying Phoebe were charged with criminal offenses.
Today, Slate’s Emily Bazelon asks, “What about the adults who knew what was happening?”

UPDATE: School officials say they won’t comment on the story until they meet with an attorney. Jeez, not so much as a “this is regrettable” or “more could have been done.” Teachers watched the abuse Prince received the day she took her life, and yet no mea culpa from the school. Arguably, bullying is a part of life for some kids. Tough as it is, no one expects a kid to die from bullying.
But that’s just what happened at a Massachusetts school.
In January, Phoebe Prince, 15, hung herself from a stairwell in her family home. A prosecutor claims the taunting and physical threats from nine teenagers pushed the young girl to take her own life. Another boy, 11, took his life in nearby Springfield last year after also facing fierce bullying. Continue reading »
If your kids are at all like mine, getting them out of bed on a school day can be like pulling teeth — in fact, you’d think you were dragging them off to have their teeth pulled, the way they fight getting up. I suspect it’s only going to get worse once they become teenagers. But if the results a British high school has seen are typical, then one simple change would pretty much make the problem go away.
