In all the sound and fury (and not a little celebration) that the new Affordable Care Act will cover birth control without a copay, some other juicy details got lost.
Best news for new moms: your health insurance will be required to provide coverage for a breast pump. Sweet! Now you can pump your milk without shelling out hundreds of dollars for a pump, or paying exhorbitant fees to rent one.
This is a good thing, right? Maybe. While most of the mommy blogs were singing the praises of the new legislation, Slate’s Rachel Larimore was none too pleased.
Will Obamacare be repealed?
The passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act last March was historic and meant to change the lives of the millions of uninsured citizens in the U.S. I for one was looking forward to having health care since I’ve been uninsured for the past year-and-a-half due to my divorce.
As I write this post, I’m suffering from Bronchitis for the third time in under four years, and I’d have to pay $250 to get a prescription at Urgent Care, so I’m just waiting the cough out. Though subsidized insurance isn’t due under the Act until 2014, if Republicans have their way, it may never happen.

Free preventative services coverage kicks in on many health plans this coming September. Sounds great–but it begs a follow up question:
What’s preventative?
There’s not likely to be an easy answer to that question. Over at Politico, Sarah Kliff reports that Planned Parenthood is working to ensure that the answer encompasses not only preventing cancer and heart disease, but preventing pregnancy as well. In other words, another battle over women’s reproductive health is quietly gearing up for a fight this summer, and no matter who provides your insurance, it’s one that probably affects you directly. Next fall, your preferred method of birth control could be available to you without a co-pay. Or it might not be covered at all.
“Kids 1, Insurance 0.”
White House press secretary Robert Gibb’s tweet sums it up nicely. Insurance companies have assured the Obama administration that they will accommodate the new law requiring them to cover children under 19 with preexisting conditions.
Hallelujah…health care reform has passed. While the process of instituting the changes will no doubt be a long and tedious one, several adjustments will take place almost instantaneously…within the next 6 months. Which ones benefit your little ones the most? Continue reading »
