Ann Nixon Cooper died today at the age of 107; she was the 100-plus year old African-American woman who voted for Barack Obama and actually lived long enough to see a Black man elected President. Most of the recent press about weight has focused on losing it. In spite of (or maybe because of?) a $30 billion a year weight-loss industry, Americans are getting fatter. Kids are gaining weight even faster than adults.
Doctors, educators and politicians have been working to fight this trend with changes to school lunch menus and projects like Operation Pull Your Own Weight, which has kids do pull-ups to stay fit. As these experts have raised the alarm, a cultural gestalt has begun around eating healthier foods. Family kitchens all over the country have been turning away from candy and toward more fruits and vegetables in their diets.

Saturday night, the House of Representatives passed a major health care reform bill; the first to clear that hurdle since Medicare was created over 40 years ago. After the birth of Alex, the Lange family sought a new insurance provider in Rocky Mountain Health Plans. The insurer then turned around and told the family their baby was “too fat” for coverage.
Alex’s parents, Bernie and Kelli, were understandably shocked.
She was willing to pay for health insurance, but no one would give it to her. She had a pre-existing condition: pregnancy.
