Are Anti-Obesity Ads Too Harsh or Just What the Doctor Ordered?

Georgia Children's Health Alliance created the new anti-obesity campaign which features images of obese children.
Georgia has released a new ad campaign to raise awareness of the problem with childhood obesity. The ads are shot in black and white, somber, and draw a very clear picture on why children are becoming obese and what the repercussions are — at the doctor’s office and the playground. The billboards feature photos of overweight children and slogans like, “Big bones didn’t make me this way. Big meals did.”
The website StopChildhoodObesity.com clearly states, “Georgia has a childhood obesity problem and a community that has had enough.” Continuing at the bottom of the page, “Ignoring this problem is what got us here. It’s time to wake up.”
While some fear that the campaign will only increase the stigma and discrimination against the overweight, others are applauding the campaign for its audacious attempt to get people to listen. Per the CBS News website, the Georgia Children’s Health Alliance defends the campaign, saying it needed to “jar parents of obese kids out of a state of denial that their children had a problem.” Continue reading »
Is Your Kid Riding In A Bad Booster Seat? We’ve Got The List
This week the International Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced their recommended lists of booster seats for children ages four to eight. While they found many that met the good fit required for children’s safety in cars, booster seat models from a couple of well-known brands — Safety 1st and Evenflo — landed on their “Not Recommended” list.
Children should ride in booster seats when they reach the height and weight limits of their forward facing car seats. The IIHS says the keys to a safer booster seat are good lap and shoulder belt fit, which means, “… the lap belt will lie flat across a child’s upper thighs, not across the soft abdomen, and the shoulder belt will cross snugly over the middle of a child’s shoulder.”
The IIHS reviewed more than 80 models of the most widely-used brands of both high back and backless booster seats, including Britax, Combi, Chicco, Graco, Evenflo, The First Years and Safety 1st. They were tested for proper fit using a crash test dummy the size of an average 6-year-old.

South Park Pokes Fun at Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Vaccination Link
In case you were wondering if Asperger’s was still considered an obscure condition that relatively few know about or understand: Wonder no more. Asperger’s Syndrome has officially entered the American mainstream through South Park.
After being gently and intelligently explored on the show Parenthood, through the story of Max, it will be interesting to see how the more crass portrayal of Asperger’s Syndrome will be received by the autism community.
Asperger’s Syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized, among other things, by awkward social behavior and a bluntness in verbal interactions brought about by an inability to empathize with others. South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, known for their irreverent humor (to say the very least) tackled those aspects of Asperger’s along with the mistaken belief by some, despite no proven medical links, that autism can be caused by vaccinations. Recall: Macaroni & Cheese Microwavable Cups
Kraft Foods announced a recall yesterday of three varieties of Velveeta & Cheese Single Serve Microwaveable Cups due to the possible presence of small, thin wire bristle pieces. Given how popular macaroni and cheese is with most kids, be sure to check any cups you have and don’t let them eat any that fit the parameters of the recall.
If you have Velveeta Shells & Cheese Single Serve Cups with the following “best when used by” dates on the bottom of the cups, you can return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund: Continue reading »
Drink More Coffee, Ladies! It May Keep Depression Away
Coffee doesn’t just make mornings more tolerable to mom, it might make her entire life rosier. According to a new study, women who drink coffee regularly show a 20% reduction in diagnosed cases of depression.
Finally, a health study that we can all get behind and drink to. Barrista, where’s my pumpkin spice latté?
The study, featured in The New York Times, analyzed the data from nearly 51,000 women and confirmed the link between depression and caffeine. An earlier study on 2200 middle-aged Finnish men had found a similar link, but could not be considered definitive because of the small sample size. The women who took part in this study were part of the Nurse’s Health Study, providing “detailed information every two years [for a ten year period], on their caffeine intake, depression risk factors and overall health, including weight, their use of hormones and their levels of exercise and smoking.” Continue reading »
