“Hannah Montana” Star Mitchel Musso Arrested
Former Disney star Mitchel Musso, who played Oliver Oken on “Hannah Montana,” was arrested last night for allegedly driving drunk.
While driving his Mercedes in Burbank, he was pulled over after driving past the scene of an accident and not following an officer’s instructions. He was given a blood alcohol test, and was “well over” the legal limit of .08, according to a police officer who spoke with the Burbank Leader. Musso, 20, has not reached the legal drinking age.
TMZ reports he paid $5000 bail and was released several hours later.
Why Don’t We Encourage Boys To Do “Girl Stuff”?
When my son William was five years old, he developed a penchant for Hannah Montana. Though I’m not a huge fan of cutesy teen programming in general, I found my small son’s obsession with girly-girl culture charming. I also didn’t want him to get the idea that he “should” be watching other shows or listening to other music just because he’s a boy. So I let it ride.
The phase, as it turned out, didn’t last long. A week after William started kindergarten, he came home looking crushed. “The boys in my class said Hannah Montana is for girls, and if I like her they won’t be my friend,” he confessed, tears welling up in his eyes.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry at a group of children. But as loudly as I protested and tried to encourage my son to watch and listen to and like whatever he darn well liked, his mind was made up. Hannah was a sacrifice, but one he was willing to make to get along. Continue reading »
Billy Ray Cyrus Regrets Being Miley’s Friend: A Lesson for All Parents

Miley Cyrus' dad says "Hannah Montana" was a big mistake, as was trying to befriend his star daughter
It’s never 100 percent clear to me why anyone is ever surprised when kids who get shoved into the spotlight at an early age melt down at some point later in life, like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Corey Haim, Demi Lovato, and Jodie Sweetin, to name just a very (very) few.
While she hasn’t landed in rehab or jail to date, Miley Cyrus is starting to show signs of trouble like those before her have also displayed along their paths to destruction. A video of the “Hannah Montana” star smoking a bong and a video of her performing a lap dance have surfaced in recent months, but now that she’s turned 18, it’s hard to wag a finger at anyone but her.
Still, her dad, country singer-turned-actor Billy Ray Cyrus is speaking out about his role in his daughter’s antics, and the regret and fear he’s feeling as a result.
Bieber Fever Now Extends to Nail Polish

Baby, Baby, Oooh! Justin Bieber Nail Polish.
Parents needn’t worry that fallen idol Miley Cyrus has moved away from her teenybopper roots, because heartthrob Justin Bieber is right there to pick up the slack. Yes, while Hannah Montana items were once ubiquitous at Wal*Mart, soon you’ll find in their place Justin Bieber nail polish – just in time for Christmas. Get it? Justin, just in time? Thud.
The 16-year-old boy wonder has “designed” six new shades of nail polish for Nicole by OPI that will be sold exclusively at Wal*Mart stores beginning in December, then shooting out to the broader retail market by February. Continue reading »
Is Miley Cyrus’s New Who Owns My Heart Video Too Racy?

A still from Miley Cyrus's new video, Who Owns My Heart.
In her latest video, Who Owns My Heart, Miley Cyrus shows quite a bit of skin and dances in a suggestive manner – with both boys and girls (shocker!). As SD’s Sandy reported earlier today, the Parents Television Council has declared the video overly “sexualized.” But PTC president Tim Winter is smart not to have accused Miley of trying to pitch this grown-up version of herself to her Hannah Montana fans. He acknowledges that this new Miley is trying to “distance herself from that fanbase,” despite having “built her fame and fortune entirely on the backs of young girls.”
As a parent and an adult woman, I’m not concerned with Cyrus turning her back on her young fans – after all, that’s to be expected of teen stars. I learned that the hard way when the New Kids on the Block broke up in ’94. But I am concerned that Cyrus seems to think of her new sexualized self as “empowered.” I wouldn’t be so quick to conflate sex and power, young Miley. Continue reading »
Miley Cyrus Continues to Live Up to Expectations
For some time now, Miley Cyrus has been desperate to shed her Disney good girl image. And I do mean desperate. After doing a poor Beyonce impression for her “Can’t Be Tamed” video, she’s back and trying even harder in her new “Who Owns My Heart” video.
The video, in which Miley Cyrus gyrates on her bed, gropes men and feels herself up while dancing, shows just how far she’s willing to go to appear to be all grown up. But while some of us think her attempts to look sexy are laughable, others don’t think it’s funny at all. Continue reading »
Has Miley Cyrus Gone Too Far?
Laura M. Holson at The New York Times recently wrote about how some of Miley Cyrus’s young fans are disenchanted by the young star and her new sexy persona. Some of the young girls who once worshipped Miley have moved on to new idols such as singer Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez from “Wizards of Waverly Place,” and Miranda Cosgrove, the star of iCarly.
In June, when Miley released her first “post-adolescent athem” “Can’t Be Tamed,” the sexy video that accompanied the album’s release sent a clear message that she didn’t want to be seen as Hannah Montana anymore.
“It was weird,” 11-year-old Perry Hamm, a once adoring Hannah Montana fan, said of Ms. Cyrus’s sexy outfit, which included black ribbon corset. “I feel like she acts 25. She looks so old. She is too old for herself.” Continue reading »
