These days Halloween is generally celebrated with costumes picked up at Target and Walmart – mass-produced odes to pop culture from Spider Man to Hannah Montana.
Now, mass-produced Halloween costumes are nothing new. Stores began to sell costumes for Halloween night way back in the 1930s, for kids and adults alike. But still a large amount of people (mostly parents) made homemade masterpieces.
And while today’s costumes are usually more cute than creepy, back in the day – think back about seventy years ago – Halloween costumes came off far more odd and eerie.
As Halloween 2011 is fast approaching, let’s journey back in time to the black and white and sepia toned era of Halloween of yore.

Halloween costumes don't need to be so gender-specific.
Gender and childhood has been a hot-button issue lately, brought to the public’s consciousness when a blogger known as Cop’s Wife “outed” her 5-year-old son in a post last Halloween called My Son is Gay. Her son dressed as Daphne for Halloween, much to the chagrin of some locals. Since then, we’ve seen figures like Princess Boy and baby Storm gain media attention as a part of a movement toward a more genderless childhood.
With that trend in mind, and in response to a slew of terribly offensive Halloween costumes designed for young girls, I’ve compiled a list of the best gender-neutral, unisex costumes for your child – boy or girl – this Halloween. Last minute Halloween costumes, like this homemade train, can be great fun!
Last night as we were tucking her into bed, my three-year-old announced that she wanted to go to school the next morning dressed as a zebra. Or a giraffe. Or a train.
“I want you to sew me a zebra costume, Mommy!”
Her dad saved the day with an awesome last minute Halloween costume: a cardboard box transformed into a colorful train.
Are you on the hunt for a last-minute costume? Here are some simple, cheap ideas for delightful costumes:
The Train: This one looks so great it’s hard to believe how easy it was. Simply cut half the bottom out of a rectangular cardboard box, and tape construction paper or felt around the edges to make the colorful sides. You can add headlights and a grill if you feel like getting fancy with your paper cut-outs. Trim the cardboard flaps into circles for wheels and color or paint them black.
How is the kid going to wear this costume, you ask?

Everyone goes trick or treating – or do they? When I was a kid, my neighborhood was full of trick or treaters. These days, my parents tell me their doorbell just doesn’t ring all that much. And yet, in some neighborhoods, trick or treating is exuberant, with loads of kids happily racing from door to door. Why is that? And where is that?
Halloween isn’t one of the holidays that comes to mind when I think “wasteful” — anything that involves the wearing of costumes and eating of delicious candy is not a waste to me. But it could be a lot more green. Authors and mother-daughter team Lynn Colwell and Corey Colwell-Lipson have written a book about greening your holidays called “Celebrate Green” and went on NPR show “Tell me More” to talk about ideas for a green Halloween.
